This is the presentation I held at the ESA App Camp at the ESRIN location in Frascati, Italy to talk about the outcome of our group's efforts in front of a jury of this one-week hackathon: An iOS application called "Badespass", which helps users find a good bathing spot (containing over 30.000 spots all over Europe already) and educating the users in a low-key fashion about environmental issues of water quality. This app leverages the soon-to-be available data from the Copernicus project's Sentinel-3 satellites.

3. IDEA
We...
...have no/not much relation to organizations engaged in environmental issues.
...are thinking user centric and are market driven.
...have no interest in lifting index fingers.
How to deliver a direct value to users and enabling them to make informed
decisions, while also making the world a better place using ESA‘s satellite data?
6. FUTURE FEATURES
• Improve feedback
• educational infos
• ozone, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter etc.
• forecasts/historic data
• data aggregation by region/country etc.
7. DATA NEEDED
• Sentinel 3: surface temperatures
• Sentinel 3: chlorophyll-a
• Sentinel 3: maybe other water quality data
• best: pre-modelled abstract water quality data (e.g. like UV index)
• Sentinel 5/p: air quality data, pre-modelled at best
• forecasts
• worldwide!
8. BUSINESS MODEL/TARGET GROUP
• End users: Normal people with
• mobile device
• internet access
• possibility for some leisure time.
• Businesses:
• regional marketing associations/touristic destinations
• bathing spot operators
• to be found...
• NGOs with environment focus
9. BUSINESS MODEL/USP
• For users:
• Providing high-quality real-time information about great bathing locations
worldwide, for an informed decision.
• For businesses:
• Stand out among competitors with proven quality.
• For the world:
• Raise awareness on water quality worldwide.
• Educate humans in a low key fashion.
• Make the world a better place!
10. BUSINESS MODEL/MONEY
• advertisement
• show ads
• in-app advertisement removal buy
• environmental protection related funds (research funds?)
• modify search ranking (must be done carefully, shall set ethical standards
before)
• provide specialized versions
• provide specialized API for other apps
• provide evaluations of historical data
11. STEPS BEFORE GO-LIVE
• localize
• check legals with data from EEA
• upgrade weather provider to paid solution
• provide a live server environment
• build robot to continously gather data from Ramani API
• imprint, privacy statement
• deactivate „inform authority“ until good data available
• ads
12. COMMERCIALIZE
• bring to app store
• online advertisement (Google, Facebook...)
• start cooperations with environment related NGOs
13. RISKS
• not enough user interest
• not enough/good enough data
14. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
...to ESA and AZO for inviting us!
...to Valentijn for Ramani!
...to Lara for pointing us to the EEA‘s water quality project!
...to Evert for helping with water quality rating algorithms!
…to Matthias for his icons!
…to Elke for her insights!
…to Paola for her ice cream tip!
