2. Welcome to NORTHUMBERLAND. This land has been filled with many royal castles,
sandy beaches, historical houses, colourful rivers and the charming Farne Islands and the
dramatic North Sea.
NORTHUMBERLAND was first found in the 7th century by St Aidan who built his
abbey at Lindisfarne. Since then, Northumberland has grown into a royal heritage and
dramatic place for visitors and people to enjoy holidays or trips away.
Since 2002, we have visited Northumberland 12 times. During the years, we have had
fun and enjoyment. In 2015, we will go again to this our heritage and most splendid and
spectacular place in Northern England.
3. Alnmouth
Alnmouth is a pretty town in Northumbrland on the banks
of the River Aln. This town has many different features
including a market place, town ahll and the glorious banks of
the sea and the River Aln.
At the end of the town, the River Aln finally meets the North Sea on
glorious banks of sand. Visitors can walk and see where the Aln and
Sea meet.
4. Berwick Upon Tweed
Beriwck Upon Tweed is a sensational town in Northumbrland. This town lies on the beautiful
banks of the River Tweed. The town also dominates England from Scotland.
The River Tweed allows many people to fish in the river but it also has 3 amazing
bridges in Berwick. One old bridge dominating 4 arches, a Railway bridge and a
modern bridge.
The most famous attraction in Berwick is the Barracks built for Queen Elizabeht I from
1558-1603. She allowed Berwick to have it’’s one barricks built from the remaining parts
of it’s old castle.
5. Historical Bamburgh
Bamburgh is a historical village/town in Northumberland.
Bamburgh dates back from the 7th century when St Aidan built
his church. Today, the church is still a house of worship in
Bamburgh.
Bamburgh Castle is a spectacular castle overlooking the
North Sea, the caslte is open to visitors. It has a museum,
shop, café and a historical castle to visit.
Grace Darling born in 1804 lived in Bamburgh until her death in
1840,, her grave & monument can be seen in the churchyard.
6. Haunted Chillingham
Chilingham is one of the most haunted castles in Northumberland.
The castle dates back to the late 13th century when the Scots and
English used to live at Chillingham. The castle today is open to
visitors but it also a very creepy and haunted castle especially i it’s
chamber and tower.
The castle also has grounds and gardens for people to walk with their
friends and dogs. There is also a shop and café for people to visit.
7. Dramatic Dunstanburgh
Dunstanburgh Castle is a historical ruined castle near Craster in
Northumbrland. Every year since 2009, we have stayed at Dunstan Hill. There
is a walk from the village out to the castle.
The castle dates from the 13th century built for Thomas, he looked after the
castle until the 13th century when the Scottish captured Thomas and took him
to Ponterfract to be killed. Since then, the castle lies on a hill overlooking the
crashing forces of the North Sea.
Craster is also a lovely village where Kippers are grown and sell and also it has many
beautiful shops and cafes for walkers and visitors to visit.
8. Farne Islands
The Farne Islands in Northumberland are on of the
beautiful stretches of land and birds. The islands is off
Seahouses but you need a boat to get you across to see
the puffins and birds.
During 689, Cuthbert lived on this land until he died on 20th
March. There is a church in his memory of the Farne Islands.
9. Sacred Lindisfarne
Lindisfarne is one of the most sacred islands in
Northumberland. Lindisfarne was the base of St
Cuthbert and Aidan during the 7th century.
Lindisfarne is occupied by it’s majestic castle and it’s
old ruined priory. Toruists must get off the island
before the causeway comes across!.
10. Warkworth & it’s hermitage
Warkworth lies on a bend in the River Coquet. The town is
full with lots of historical features such as the church
and it’s bridges on the Coquet.
The castle was first built in 13th century to occupied the
town and the river. Today, the castle is a heritage site full
with history and gems. It also has a hermitage which Is
on the Coquet. The castle is maintained by English
Heritage.
