Our brains start to slow down by the time we
reach our mid-20s. Shocking isn’t, it? However,
this does not mean that all is lost. New studies
suggest that we can train our brains to stay
young and active. It must be surprising to many
of us but our brains can be trained to perform
significantly at a better level, just like we would
train our body to improve our fitness level.
Also, just like our body, physical exercise, good
nutrition, lower stress levels and good amount
of sleep can keep our brains healthy too. Yes,
there is no single activity that can ensure our
brain health but there is an array of activities
we can do to prevent our brain rom rusting.
Here are some useful tips that can help our
brain always stay young and active.
Mental stimulation
Regular mental stimulation activates new
connections between nerve cells in your brain.
This can help in generating new cells that acts
as a functional reserve in the future as you age
and as the brain cells function diminish. This is
why activities that potentially stimulate your
brain are the recipe to keep your brain young.
Experiment with different things and always
strive to add new things as your hobbies and
routine to stimulate your brain. These activities
challenges and activate different parts of the
brain and build your brain functions.
Play brain games
Play games that excite your brain as well as
challenge it. Checkers, chess, card games,
board games, etc. these games are known to
reduce the chances of dementia and even slow
down it. What these games really do is build
your cognition and enhance your functional
reserve. Hence, they activate the brain and keep
your brain young for a long time to come.
Video games which involve quests, problems
solving and spatial skills can be great to keep
your brain active. They act similar to brain
training activities and play a vital role in
keeping your brain young and active.
Learn a new language
Learning and conversing in more than one
language is always good for your brain.
Speaking in more than one language is nothing
but multitasking. While growing up speaking
two languages is the best way to keep your
brain stimulated, it is never late to learn a new
language.
Conversing on a daily basis in more than one
language is also known to delay the onset of
dementia. As being bilingual or multi-lingual
demands attention and draws challenge to your
brain, they are good for your brain health.
Doing something new
Joining a dance class, gardening or learning to
play an instrument – doing something new can
be good for your brain. They are known to
enhance your brain power. They activate the
part of the brain that deals with attention and
storing memories. Hence, these activities can
challenge your brain and help it stay on alert.
Further, as learning to do salsa or playing the
guitar is a complex process, the blood flow to
your brain increases. They strengthen your
ability to learn and understand things. Further,
these activities also act as stress relievers and
help in keeping your brain young forever.
Do not stress too much
Stress is never good for your brain. It can affect
your memory, learning ability as well solving
skills. In short, it can affect the quality of
working of your brain. Physical activities, yoga,
hobbies, travel – do whatever you need to do to
distress yourself.
Do not abuse your body
Smoking can affect your brain and cause your
cortex to become thinner. This is related to
decline of memory. Further, the thinning of
cortex can continue for a long time after you
stop smoking. Likewise, excessive drinking can
also affect your brain health. It has the
potential to cause dementia. However, there are
studies that suggest that limited drinking or
low-dose consumption of alcohol can in fact
reduce the risk of dementia.
Healthy diet
A healthy diet, like exercise, can be beneficial for
your brain. Antioxidant rich foods fight against the
harmful free radicals that have the potential to
damage the brain cells. Reduce or avoid consumption
of saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. Further,
certain specific foods like the one rich in B vitamins
help to maintain your mental health. They reduce the
homocysteine levels that can reduce the risk of
dementia.
Eating just the optimal calories your body requires
also decreases the risk of certain diseases thereby
reducing the risk of decline in mental health.
Diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol levels and high
blood pressure have detrimental effects on brain
health. Since all of these disorders can be controlled
or prevented by healthy food consumption, a healthy
diet can also keep your brain young.
Physical activity
It is necessary to keep your body active to keep
your brain dynamic. Exercise can positively
affect the functions of your brain. Regular
exercise increases the blood flow to your brain.
This increases the supply of oxygen to the brain
and thereby improves the activity of brain and
provides fuel for its functions. Physical exercise
leads to development of new brain cells and
escalates the connections between brain cells.
These act as a functional reserve as well as
enhance the function and performance of your
brain. Exercises are also known to stave off
decline in mental health. Further, exercise
keeps you in pink of health preventing any
damage to your brain or any other part of the
body that can indirectly affect your brain.

Yes, there is no single activity that can ensure our brain health but there is an array of activities we can do to prevent our brain rom rusting. Here are some useful tips that can help our brain always stay young and active.
  • 3. Mental stimulation Regular mental stimulation activates new connections between nerve cells in your brain. This can help in generating new cells that acts as a functional reserve in the future as you age and as the brain cells function diminish. This is why activities that potentially stimulate your brain are the recipe to keep your brain young. Experiment with different things and always strive to add new things as your hobbies and routine to stimulate your brain. These activities challenges and activate different parts of the brain and build your brain functions.
  • 4. Play brain games Play games that excite your brain as well as challenge it. Checkers, chess, card games, board games, etc. these games are known to reduce the chances of dementia and even slow down it. Eating just the optimal calories your body requires also decreases the risk of certain diseases thereby reducing the risk of decline in mental health. Diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure have detrimental effects on brain health. Since all of these disorders can be controlled or prevented by healthy food consumption, a healthy diet can also keep your brain young.
