What is the
compulsory school
age in the UK?
All children in Great Britain must attend
full time education from the school year
they turn 5 years old (4 in Northern
Ireland) until the school year they turn
years old.
However, in England a child must then
one of the following until they turn 18
old:
Remain in full-time education, for
at a school or college.
Start an apprenticeship.
Remain in part-time education or
whilst working or volunteering at least
hours per week.

In England since September 2010, all three and four year olds are entitled to 15 hours
of free nursery education for 38 weeks of the year. Early Years education takes place in
a variety of settings including state nursery schools, nursery classes and reception
classes within primary schools, as well as settings outside the state sector such as
voluntary pre-schools, privately run nurseries or childminders.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) came into force in September 2008, and is a
single regulatory and quality framework for the provision of learning, development
and care for children in all registered early years settings between birth and the
academic year in which they turn 5.

£9,250 a year for
undergraduate tuition.
Accelerated degrees
(which are completed in
less time) universities in
England can charge up to
£11,100.
The maximum Welsh
universities can charge is
£9,000 a year.

England for a loan of up to £9,250 (or up to
£11,100 for an accelerated degree in England).
This will cover your tuition fees.
Other additional means tested loans to help
with living costs.
Loans are paid back only when you earn the
equivalent of £25,725 per year.
Payment is taken through salary.
