Join me in this session, as I review today's most popular API formats and their relative strengths and weaknesses. From REST, through OpenAPI, via gRPC and to the rising star of AsyncAPI - we'll explain how these API formats work and the tools they employ and offer some guidance as towards when we should use each. The open source TodoMVC project implements a Todo application using popular JavaScript MV* frameworks. Some of the implementations add support for compile to JavaScript languages, module loaders and real time backends. This presentation will demonstrate a TodoMVC implementation which adds support for the forthcoming W3C Web Cryptography API, as well as review some key cryptographic concepts and definitions. Instead of storing the Todo list as plaintext in localStorage, this "secure" TodoMVC implementation encrypts Todos using a password derived key. The PBKDF2 algorithm is used for the deriveKey operation, with getRandomValues generating a cryptographically random salt. The importKey method sets up usage of AES-CBC for both encrypt and decrypt operations. The final solution helps address item "A6-Sensitive Data Exposure" from the OWASP Top 10. With the Web Cryptography API being a recommendation in 2014, any Q&A time will likely include browser implementations and limitations, and whether JavaScript cryptography adds any value.

Unfortunately, those techniques introduce performance and management challenges when used at large VM densities, and may not work well with containerized applications. Fortunately, the Xen Project community has collaborated to create a solution which reduces the potential of success associated with rootkit attack vectors. When combined with recent advancements in processor capabilities, and secure development models for container deployment, it’s possible to both protect against and be proactively alerted to potential zero-day attacks. In this session, we’ll cover models to limit the scope of compromise should an attack be mounted against your infrastructure. Two attack vectors will be illustrated, and we’ll see how it’s possible to be proactively alerted to potential zero-day actions without requiring significant reconfiguration of your datacenter environment. Technology elements explored include those from Black Duck, Bitdefender, Citrix, Intel and Guardicore.

While graph databases are primarily known as the backbone of the modern social networks, we have found a much more interesting application for them: program analysis. This talk aims to demonstrate that graph databases and the typical program representations developed in compiler construction are a match made in heaven, allowing large code bases to be mined for vulnerabilities using complex bug descriptions encoded in simple, and not so simple graph database queries. This talk will bring together two well-known but previously unrelated topics: static program analysis and graph databases. After briefly covering the "emerging graph landscape" and why it may be interesting for hackers, a graph representation of programs exposing syntax, control-flow, data-dependencies and type information is presented, designed specifically with bug/backdoors/business logic flaws hunting in mind. Capabilities of the system will then be demonstrated live with Joern, an open source code exploration tool, as we craft queries for RCE exploits, insider attacks, data leak detection.

Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
