This document provides information about drug abuse in the Philippines. It discusses statistics on drug prevalence, common reasons why teens abuse substances, and the various physical and psychological effects of drug use. It also outlines the government's countermeasures against drug abuse, including the creation of the Dangerous Drugs Board. Finally, it details drug crimes and penalties, ranging from life imprisonment or death for drug trafficking to fines and rehabilitation for possession and use of drugs. The key message is that drugs can seriously harm young people both physically and mentally, and the government enforces strict laws against drug crimes.
6. There are many difficult physical and emotional changes that take place when young people move from childhood to the teenage years, a period often called adolescence. This is generally the critical time when most young people begin experimenting with drugs.
7. What are drugs? A psychoactive substance people take to change either the way they feel, think, or behave.
19. The Dangerous Drugs Board was created by virtue of Republic Act 6425 subsequently repealed by RA 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. The new and stiffer law mandates the DDB to be the National policy-making and strategy formulating body on all matters pertaining to drug abuse prevention and control. As such, it issues implementing rules and programs, for compliance by all operating drug law enforcement bodies and other government agencies. It is, however, not limited to policy formulation as can be gleaned from its functions enumerated under Section 81 of the Drug Law.
