There is no doubt that the importance of education and schooling in the lives of our youth today. It
serves many purposes such as attainment of knowledge, the opportunity to reach goals and the
learning of norms in our society. It also provides other latent functions such as child care and a safe
place to be when parents are working. School also allows for other functions to occur such as
patriotism, innovation, competition and establishing peer friendships. Education and schooling is a
necessity in any society and at its core helps establish and teach the norms and laws of a society.
But we are imperfect people and in any imperfection there is conflict.
Due to social placement, students at an early age are put on a certain track that undermines many
students their ability to succeed. Students, as soon as they reach elementary school, are placed in
certain categories labeling or tracking them in a certain way. If a child does not catch on or takes
more attention to get to answers or attain knowledge, teachers may put them on a slower pace easier
track and pass that information on to the next teacher. If students are at a higher pace they might be
put in the gifted or advance track. This becomes a self–fulfilling prophecy where both the teacher
and the student believe in what they have been told or what they have assessed. A child's
self–esteem is formed in the years that they are enrolled in school. I am a parent of two differently
abled children. My oldest always had trouble in school and I knew right away that something was
not right, I asked teacher after to teacher to get her tested and instead they labeled my child as
inept. They just kept piling homework on her that would last hours instead of really helping my
child. Finally, right before third grade I forced the issue and she was tested. She was diagnosed with
dyslexia, short term memory loss and ADD. She was also was determined to have an above average
IQ. My child was placed or tracked into the lower classes when what she really needed was help. I

How Education Has Changed My Life
Education has been a part of my life ever since I was born. My mother is a teacher, and I have
always been in her classroom, and seeing her teaching kids is something I feel I knew I wanted to
do ever since I was little. As I grew older, I had a rough time in school. I was identified with a
learning disability in the fourth grade which helped me become successful and also made school

I disagree with Bloom because he encourages the idea of taking extra irrelevant classes to achieve
the experience of education. It usually takes about four years to earn a bachelors degree. There are
many courses such as English, math, history, art, etc. that a student must go through before they get
to start on the classes that concentrate on their intended major. These basic courses are part of a
program called general education. After completing general education (which usually takes about
two years), the students can then begin to study for their degree. Colleges should abandon the law
of students having to take general education courses because the courses are irrelevant to their field
of study, unnecessary and a waste of time. Instead of taking the extra courses, students can simply
meet their needs of a degree in a shorter period of time. Also, Bloom not only that wants students to
take general education courses, he wants them to further their education by taking advanced
irrelevant courses. Therefore, in their future, they would have numerous opportunities for a better
career. Because if a job is not right for the student, he would have other choices to obtain a new job.

"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." This quote, said by
Nelson Mandela, states that education can be used to change the world and be used for the
betterment of society, yet education across America it is still not a top priority. Thousands of schools
across America are severely underfunded and have trouble providing the resources to properly
educate the next American generation, a generation that will eventually become the future of the
country. Education spending, however, is at an all–time high compared to past decades, but funding
still mostly comes from state and local resources. Having more funding for education from the
government will help improve schools across the country because it will help students in long–term
ways, help equalize education from state to state, and help student performance.
The first way that increasing government education funds will help American school systems is, that
it will help students later on in life. One study, written by Kirabo Jackson, Rucker Johnson, and
Claudia Persico, showed that tests on low–income districts found that increasing school spending
steadily by 10 percent over a course of twelve years helped lower adult poverty, increase graduation
rates, and cause students to have a 10% increase in adult earnings later in life. This study shows that
increasing education spending does not have to be billions of dollars in order to make a difference

educational background. Isn't this what forms people, their education? Of course, this doesn't always
have to refer to their organized education. Everything that a person learns is something that educates

Starting in Nana's Nuggets preschool, which had a lot of interactive learning, I began my first
venture into organized education. This was a very warm environment, same as in my home, where
caring and working with others was very important. I made a lot of friends in this school that I
actually stayed with through all of high school. When this short stint was finished, I graduated onto
Seward Elementary School, located in the same buildings as the Middle and High Schools, where I
first learned that kissing a girl on the hand in kindergarten at story time wasn't a good idea. In the
Seward Community Schools system, ones learns a lot about the natural world around them, and about
Alaska in general, being as it is one of the worlds greatest natural resources. After first grade, there
was a new building necessary, as the population of Seward, like any other place on earth, was
growing. This new school was where I had a second grade teacher who had actually been in the
Ms. America pageant, whom everyone had a crush on. I started music which I loved every minute
of, as it would become a large part of me. As any other elementary school, this was where I learned
my basic stuff of course: typing, addition, speling, and even crazy things like percentages!
Going into middle school, I always had a taste for math and science, learning quickly all I could.
