In response to the employees communicating freely with managers, the employees' are unlikely to
be ignored, which is often the case in autocratic leadership when decisions are made by the
managers, so that the needs and wants of employees could be met which will make for the
motivation and may prevent disputes between the firm and employees (Kendra Cherry, 2012). In
addition to that advantage, feedbacks from subordinates may help managers to identify potential
problems in production or decision making and to fix them appropriately.
Communication and leadership are the nonfinancial factors affecting the motivation of employees
which has great impact on productivity and efficiency (Stimpson and Farquharson, 2012). Two–way
communication encouraged by the democratic leadership will help the managers satisfy the
employees and provide guidance for them to help with their tasks. Employees would feel their sense
of belongings in the firm, and the friendly atmosphere in work place. According to the Maslow's
hierarchy of human needs, the third level, social needs, are satisfied. Additionally, the democratic
leader may pass obligations to the subordinates and authorize them to make their own decisions in a
task, rather than just delegate the fixed task for them to finish without any flexibility, so that the
employees may feel the responsibility about their task thus they will not reach full utility.

Motivation and Leadership Essay
Motivation and Leadership are intrinsically linked in the fact that one allows an easement in the
process of the other. Without the ability to use the mutual relationship of leadership to influence
the motivators of followers, leaders stagnate and are limited by their own inability to accomplish
all that must be for real change to occur. In less Rostonian terms (that is, based on Rost (1993)),
without a motivated group of followers leaders are stranded and not achieving to a level of
excellence. This paper will discuss some areas of importance for motivation in leadership as well as
an application to leadership theory and a discussion on personal motivators. Motivation is the reason

Osland, et al. (2007) provide a good introduction to three basic motivational content theories. The
first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or
more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social
belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most
basic (like food and water) to the highest level (self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate
to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there is
little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more
basic needs first satisfied. The second content theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned
needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or
affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive
connotation or implementation, but it is argued that people motivated by affiliation make better
leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that
Theory X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas
Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and ambitious. Steers, et al. (1996) identify an
additional theory of motivation, which builds on Maslow's

People requires good leadership skills at personal, professional and social level. Personal
leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and abilities. It means Knowing what we
want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those
goals regardless of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our
present better and shape a good future. Good leadership is also important to run a business. Usually,
in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and
smart decision will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those
decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper implementation , there will

Business Leadership Essay
In corporate America the term used to describe a person in a position of power is "Manager". A
leader can be a manager, but a manager is not necessarily a leader. Leaders motivate, challenge,
and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes
which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as
managing an organization. Leader's posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to
achieve a goal willingly. Leading is a major part of a manager's job. Leaders do not need to be a
manager to lead people, but managers must know how to lead as well as manage. Each person in a

Bova (2008) states that the following four characteristics are found in good leaders: they believe in
open communication, they do not stick with the status quo, they are selective in what they measure,
and they have passion for values and culture. Each characteristic is essential to a healthy
organizational culture. When an employee feels he or she has open communication with a leader,
they are more inclined to share if problems arise whether or not work related. Non–work related
issues may eventually take a toll on an employee's performance at work. However, with open
communication, an employee feels comfortable in apprising the leader of a situation so that
future problems are avoided. Not all managers are leaders and not all leaders are managers. The
biggest difference between management and leadership is people skills. In determining if a
person is a leader or a manager, Bova (2008) lists some differences with which many a person
would agree. One difference is that a manager directs people. Managers essentially tell employees
to get the job done. Many people work on autopilot until their work shift ends. However, people will
follow a leader. Leaders inspire others to want to strive for their best and to go beyond their normal
duties. Another difference between managers and leaders is that managers tend to control or
micromanage their department. Such management style causes employees to be unhappy and
possibly rebel. Under these types of

Leadership versus Management Essay
Is every good manager a good leader? Is every leader a good manager? Leadership and management
are often used in similar perspectives, yet they do not share the same meaning. Leaders are exactly
what the name says – they lead team members to success. Managers, like leaders, have the meaning
referenced in the name. Managers manage over employees, striving for success. The two titles can
be used simultaneously with one person, but this is a rare occurrence.
According to MSN Encarta Dictionary, the term manage has several meanings. One of the
explanations state that to manage is to "administer or run something – to be in charge...and be
responsible for its smooth running and for any personnel" (Encarta, 2008). MSN Encarta Dictionary

A leader guides his or her employees in the right direction so that they as a team achieve positive
results. A leader helps employees to know the correct methods used in performing daily tasks. A
leader focuses on training the employees and assisting them in furthering their knowledge of the
industry. Employees look up to leaders and trust that the leaders are guiding them along the correct
path.
What are the differences between managers and leaders? "The biggest difference between
managers and leaders is the way they motivate the people who work or follow them, and this sets
the tone for most other aspects of what they do" (Changing Minds, 2008). Managers hire people to
work underneath them to accomplish tasks for a common goal. These people are considered
subordinates. Leaders have followers. These followers are considered employees. Leaders are
passionate about something and bring this level of understanding and emotion to others around
them. Managers deal with the physical aspect of the position, whereas leaders deal with the personal
aspect of the position.
Do all managers have leadership skills? The majority of managers possesses management skills but
lacks the leadership skills that are needed to be an accomplished person in charge. A manager is
someone with a title, who has subordinates that are paid to obey and complete assignments. A
leader is someone who people choose to follow. Leaders are not always managers. Any person

Leadership in Innovation
LEADERSHIP
The activity of leading a group of people or an
organization or the ability to do this.
Leadership involves
(1) establishing a clear vision,
(2) sharing that vision with others so that they will
follow willingly,
(3) providing the information, knowledge and methods
to realize that vision, and
(4) coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests
of all members and stakeholders.

Innovation includes three different stages, which are all dynamic and iterative (constant):
1. Idea Generation
2. Evaluation
3. Implementation
The two types of innovation include exploratory innovation, which involves generating brand new
ideas, and exploitative innovation, which involves modifying and improving ideas that already
exist.[10][11][12][13] It is of importance to note that the ideas generated need to be useful in order to
be considered innovative. Innovation should also not be confused with creativity, which is merely
the generation of a novel idea that may not necessarily be put into operation, although these words
are sometimes used interchangeably in research literature when speaking about innovation
leadership. Innovation leadership is a quite complex concept, as there is no single explanation or
formula for a leader to follow to increase innovation. As a result, innovation leadership encompasses
a variety of different, activities, actions, and behaviors that interact with one another to produce an
innovative outcome.
Innovative Organizational Culture/Climate
Some studies have shown evidence of organizational culture as the mediator of the relationship
between transformational leadership and organizational innovation [21][22][23][24] and
performance.[25][26] In other words, in order for transformational leadership to have an effect

Toxic Leadership Essay
Leadership is that process in which one person sets the purpose or direction for one or more other
persons and gets them to move along together with him or her and with each other in that direction
with competence and full commitment (Elliott, 2009). Leadership is supposed to guide people to
attain a particular set vision. Motivation is fundamental in the process of leadership as if there is no
motivation there will be laxity among the people involved. It is also a critical scenario for
leadership to have followers; this will infer a relationship between leaders and followers (Frank,
2003). Emotions of a leader are so important in this aspect of leadership. It is through emotions that
the leader will be categorized as 'toxic' or...show more content...
Those leaders that are frequently nervous, annoyed and irritated can be emotionally toxic leaders.
Many leaders from this category are often overwhelmed by these negative emotions and they cannot
even be aware of the negative consequences they produce (Goleman, 2005).
1.Toxic leadership A toxic leader can be defined as leader motivated by egocentrism, self–interest
and show no concern for those below him, and his actions negatively affect the organizational
climate. They exalt themselves in turf protection, fighting and controlling their followers instead of
uplifting them. Toxic leaders are very destructive and they only focus on short term
accomplishments and they destroy their followers to achieve those objectives. Their decisions are
made hasty and they change their decisions without any justified rationale. Mostly, they lazy around
only to make hasty decisions when it is too late and the crisis is already in place. Such decisions
have no time to be thought over and therefore, they are continuously changed throughout
implementation so as to work effectively and may even be altered completely thereby making the
whole process messy (Seeger, 2005). According to Lipman–Blumen, toxic leadership is also
influenced by the type of followers a leader has. Followers limit the leadership qualities of a leader
when they become unruly and rebellious prompting him to act arrogantly and rude. He points out
that leaders are human and are imperfect

Reflection Paper On Ethical Leadership
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on my thoughts on how I can utilize certain methods that
will help shape the vision of the organization. I will explain how ethics play a role in leadership
and decision making. This week I encountered multiple dilemmas which affected my actions at
work, home, and school; in this paper I will exploit those dilemmas and how they are considered
weakness that I incorporated in my IDP. Using last week 's assignment to start an IDP, I came up
with certain actions (part 3) to take to further advance myself as a leader. The reasoning behind these
actions will show how proper ethical actions define a leader, and the influence it holds with the
organization's culture.

It is rare that a person can easily find their own faults, because they think that everything they do is
right or justified. For the longest time this was me. As expressed by Urbany, Joel, Reynolds, and
Phillips (2008), "Chief among these traps, especially regarding decisions that people later come to
regret, is their failure to evaluate decisions in a comprehensive way that focuses on values
trade–offs." I thought I was a great leader, and there was nothing else that I could learn as a person.
It was through the assessments and this week's work reflection, I realized through regret there is so
much work needs to be done. I have to acknowledge my downfalls willingly in order to correct
them. I realized that my ambitions strive me to continually take on tasks. I felt overwhelmed this
week because of these ambitions. I understand that my attitude at times can alter a situation because I
have people looking at everything that I do. Even though I tried to hide my true feelings for the best
of the organization, my thoughts reflected in my actions. Two other weaknesses are time–
management and organization. These two goes hand in hand and I realized that I suffer
tremendously from lack thereof and have found multiple solutions to help enhance these
weaknesses as I expressed in the IDP. I feel these two will be challenging as well because I realize
that organization at work is limited. It is much more of filling in the gaps and

Essay on Effective Team Leadership
Effective Team Leadership
The area of team leadership attracts a lot of attention in the modern world because of the need to
assemble and deploy diverse teams for the completion of projects. The future of many corporations
relies more and more on the kind of team leadership they have for their projects. This paper explores
a number of facets that constitute effective team leadership.
There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. It may refer to the
totality of an organization's top direction–giving functionaries, or the actions applied in providing
direction that enables the organization or team to move forward towards a goal. In reality, there are
very diverse definitions of leadership depending on...show more content...
This vision attracts would–be followers to join in the effort to alleviate the challenge. Thirdly, it is
characteristic of leadership to possess the skills required to harness the resources that a group brings
together and to apply those resources in alleviating the challenge in order to deliver the vision.
Without leadership, a team lacks direction and cohesion. Leadership is there to solve challenges
associated with teamwork and to insure the attainment of the main objective of the team effort.
Leadership reduces the risks associated with a project. This happens because the person or team
providing direction for the project do not get involved in detailed implementation freeing them to
see the big picture from which they identify and reduce or eliminate risks. Leadership increasingly
means the difference between a successful project and a failed one despite the availability of
resources. This is because of the role leadership plays in the effective allocation of resources to
achieve the projects objectives.
On organization is the legacy of its past leaders. This means that all decisions a leader made while in
charge live on through the systems he established, the opportunities he seized, and the mistakes he
made. In team leadership, the outcome of the team effort depends on the skill the leader possesses

Essay on Management and Leadership
Successful organizations have strong leaders and managers that develop, support and encourage
employee longevity within a company. There is a significant difference between leadership and
management however both skills have to be used collectively and both are important to a profitable
organization. Leadership is a notion of communicating an organization's vision, whereas management
is more of the implementation of the organization's vision. The manager typically carries out the
responsibilities written by the organization and has a good team underneath them to carry out the
duties and meet the goals. Most companies have a mission statement that mirrors and supports a
company's vision. When referring leadership and management, the two...show more content...
According to Hersey and Blanchard (1998), there are three areas required for effective leadership.
Technical skills, which includes clinical expertise and knowledge as it pertains to nursing.
Secondly, human skills, which is the ability and judgment to work with people in leadership roles.
And lastly, conceptual skills which is the ability to understand the complexities of overall
organization and figure out how and where one's own strengths of management fits into the overall
organization (Cherry, Jacob 2011). Leadership is unique compared to any other role because of its
responsibility for people. Good leaders are followed merely because they have gained people's trust
and respect.
Management:
Management involves the tactical aspect of day to day functions and who keeps control of the
work environment to make sure the organization is moving forward and in the same direction of
the company's vision. Managers are faced with many responsibilities each day, one of which is
managing people. The goal of a successful manager is to achieve the highest productivity of the
organization by way of the people he/she manages. A manager is more of a problem solver and
takes care of work areas relating to people management, time management, decision making etc.
According to Lewin (1951) and White & Lippit (1960), there are three prevalent management
behavior styles: Authoritarian, democratic and laissez–fare (Cherry,

Leadership Traits
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership
traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of
listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or
characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest,
competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are
some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall

Leadership is an action not a position. With the proper personality, a leader can accomplish many
things like knowledge of the organization. Being able to handle all type of situations shows great
leadership traits. According to (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy) the adjustment dimension of the Five
Factor Model of Personality "is concerned with how people react to stress, failure, or personal

Essay about Women in Leadership Roles
INTRODUCTION
More and more women are rising to the leadership challenge, even in some of the most
male–dominated industries. The increase in the number of women attending college, the increasing
number of women in the workplace or starting their own business has demonstrated to men who own
businesses that women can be both managers and mothers, thus showing their male counterpart that
women can in fact "do it all".
In this paper the history of women in the workforce will be outlined, as well as the challenges they
face. The changing attitudes towards women taking over family businesses will be looked at briefly,
how women lead in comparison to how men lead, and a comparison of their leadership style will also
be discussed.

Those days have since past. As women are achieving higher levels of education and are being
employed in more prominent positions, their leadership roles in family organizations have
increased. Many young women are refusing to accept the rule of "primogeniture" (Nelton, 1999).
Primogeniture is defined as a birthright or an inheritance. Although women are making great strides
in this arena, there is still the feeling out there that the son should be considered first and the
daughter as a second option, only if there is no son or if the son declines the offer. But, Nelton says
that, "young women by and large feel that if they want to go into the family business, the
opportunity is there." In each of the cases described by Nelton, the fathers encouraged their
daughters to become involved in the family business. As well, each father let his daughter run the
show once she was named CEO–the surest sign of support (Nelton, 1999). In more and more
families and in business in general, gender is becoming not an issue. As roles increasingly change
on the home front, the business world will soon mirror the changes taking place in the family
structure. Nelton also urges women in leadership roles to not lose sight of the bottom line. She says
it is "easy for women to get caught up in the management of people" (Nelton, 1999). She goes on to
say that if you cannot prove that you are also profit–driven, you will never make it to the successor
level.

Synthesis Paper : Leadership And Leadership
Synthesis Paper: Leadership Introduction Over the years, a great deal of time, and research has
been dedicate to the study of leadership. Even with extensive data on the topic, many still disagree
on what leadership really means. Hence, leadership is a word that has many different meanings
and different researched theories associated with it. On a basic level, leadership involves having
and establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with followers, respecting followers, and leading
an organization with excellence while ensuring that everyone is part of the team. Leadership is
also a method by which a leader uses his or her influence towards getting a group of followers to
take ownership or buy into a vision. Effectiveness of leadership rest solely on the style of leadership
that the leader embraces. Many times it is also contingent upon the framework of leadership. This
simply suggests that dissimilar leadership styles are applicable in different situations. In order to be
effective, one must possess an array of skills, influence, traits, behaviors, values, motivation and
relationships with followers. Effectiveness of leadership is also the result of the mind, body, soul
and spirit coming together to be a visionary, passionate, flexible, inspiring, innovative, courageous,
experimental, and initiates change. Effective leadership means are centered on creating an
invigorating environment that is safe, fair, and consistent for all. The aforementioned statements

Belasen, A & Frank, N 2008,"Competing values leadership: quadrant roles and personality

The intention of this paper is to validate the number and order of leadership roles and identify the
personality traits, which trigger the choice of leadership roles. The authors used a survey addressing
classification and measurement questions in each of the competing values framework (CVF), which
was administered to a sample of managerial leaders across organisations. Multidimensional scaling
representing the underlying dimensions in a spatial arrangement was conducted, which was also
used to test the degree–of–fit between the roles and quadrants as well as to examine the relationships
between personality traits and leadership roles. The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the CVF
and at the same time draws conclusions about how traits affect the choice of leadership roles, how
they influence the extent of managerial effectiveness and to what extent managerial choice of roles
is conscious or just a stimulus response. While there is considerable agreement about the overall
value of the CVF, recent research about the arrangement and dimensions

Autocratic Leadership : Authoritarian Leadership
Autocratic leadership, also known as authoritarian leadership, is a type of management style that is
used when a leader dictates policies and procedures, decides what goals should be achieved, and
directs and controls all activities without any meaningful participation by the subordinates. The
autocratic leader has full control of the team, with low autonomy within the group. These leaders
typically make decisions based on their ideas and judgments, seldom taking advice from other
individuals. Like any other leadership style, the autocratic style of leadership has its pros and cons.
Characteristics of autocratic leadership includes:
* Mainly wants obedience from the subordinates
* The leader determines everything
* The leader is the one to structure workloads for their employees
* Workers compliance are known to possibly become obtained through threats and punishments
* Employees have little responsibility
* Employees feel a certain amount of security
* Highly skilled professionals discourage this type of leadership because there is a negative effect
on growth, development, initiative and a sense of responsibility
* In this environment, fear, conflict, dissatisfaction, and frustration are common to come into play
* Employees are rarely trusted with decisions or important tasks
Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when choices need to be made quickly without checking in
with a large group. Strong leadership may also be required to have things done efficiently and

Negative Leadership Behavior There are many examples of poor leadership behavior in today's
workplace. Inadequate leadership can be detrimental not only to a team within an organization, but
also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is vital for upper management to ensure that their
leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a
leader's weaknesses are overlooked, large problems occur.
Example of Negative Leadership At my previous place of employment, I had many effective and
helpful leaders. I also had some that were somewhat poor, and some that were downright awful.
There was one leader who stood out the most to me as an example of negative leadership behavior.

One of the most important is that this supervisor's employees were completely denied the
opportunity to learn and grow. This definitely breeds resentment among the employees, as the entire
staff begins to feel that shortness in opportunity is preventing them from moving forward
professionally (Walker, 2002). Furthermore, a lack of learning and developing leads to low
self–esteem, motivation, and moral. It was very obvious that the entire team felt this way, as they
were not trusted to take on these situations. This, in turn, negatively affected the entire company, as
talent was not being properly developed. In addition to the staff being negatively influenced, this
particular supervisor was constantly under incredible stress. Her workload was so large that she
was merely capable of spending a small amount of time on each issue, therefore denying each one
the best care. For selected individuals, having too large a workload can psychologically inhibit them
from achieving anything (Black Enterprise, 2010). In this case, she managed to do the bare
minimum on most everything, but never well and never in a timely manner. This negatively affected
the company as well, since customers were receiving poor service from a leader within the
company, and therefore from her entire team. Moreover, her stress level contributed largely to the
attitude and stress level of the entire team, leading to

Servant Leadership Essay
Servant Leadership
What is it? The phrase "Servant Leadership" was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as
a Leader, an essay he first published in 1970 ("What is servant," ). The servant leader serves first,
while aspiring to lead second. The servant leader serves the people that he or she leads, implying
employees are an end in themselves rather than a means to organizational purpose or bottom–line.
Servant leadership is meant to replace a command and control, top–down, model of management.
Servant leadership encourages collaboration, trust, foresight, listening, and the ethical use of power
and empowerment. A few famous examples of servant leaders are George Washington, Gandi and
Caesar Chavez.

8.Stewardship
Greenleaf's view of all institutions was one in which CEO's, staff, directors and trustees all play
significant roles in holding institutions in trust for the greater good of society.
9.Commitment to the Growth of People
Leaders believe people have an intrinsic value beyond tangible contributions as workers. As a result,
genuine interest in the spiritual, professional and personal growth of all employees is demonstrated.
10.Building Community
Leaders seek to identify a means for building a sense of community among those who work in a
given institution.
Differences from Other Styles In the approach on general leadership characteristics, the
fundamental difference is authentic leaderships strive to be "real", whereas servant leaders strive
to be "right." Servant leadership is a style that lays down a set of characteristics that all leaders are
supposed to emulate to attain success, and tries to shape the character and personality of the leader.
On the other hand, authentic leaders tend to rely on their own unique set of experiences and style
that has been learned and developed throughout their career. The main difference between servant
and authentic styles, when applying into practice, is the serving of others. One of the primary
applications is to give priority to the interest of others. Servant leaders exercise their duty

I: Introduction
Leadership and mentoring has generally been mistaken to be the same thing however during the
course of this assignment I aim to prove otherwise that although leaders and mentors may share some
similar traits they have different definitions and perform different functions. There are different
types of leaders and also mentors; examples of famous leaders are Nelson Mandela, Adolf Hitler,
Abraham Lincoln Barrack Obama, examples of mentors are Socrates who mentored Aristotle who
subsequently mentored Alexander the Great....show more content...
Mentoring for the mentor is about challenging himself to perform to greater capabilities while
nurturing a mentee and stretching them to realise their full potential. Mentors counsel, tutor and
guide their mentees in developing themselves. A mentor however has to understand his role and not
get caught up with his mentee too personally and possibly emotionally as this can affect his
judgement in giving out advice to the mentee in vital situations.
III: Exemplary Models
A leader carries himself with high self–esteem giving out intelligent and well thought out answers
and making the right decisions when needed this increases his reputation and subsequently transfers
to his supporters who are at ease to know they have put their faith in the right leader (Northouse
2004 P.19) said that although it is important for a leader to be intelligent it is also important that he
and his supporters are moving in the right direction together. Leaders who are very smart may have
difficulties relating their ideas to their supporters this can lead to disagreements in the organisation.
A leader has to understand what is required of him and how he can give effectiveleadership to his
followers. (Northouse) also says that they are born leaders and people who learn to be leaders. Born
leaders exhibit leadership

The Relationship of Power and Leadership Essay
The Relationship of Power and Leadership
Management 1115 & Leadership
October 7,2012
In the world we live in today the roles of power and leadership are often confused. Although they
have similar meanings, they can be distinctly defined between the latter. The key difference between
the two is the term of effect. Power is the exercise of leadership, and leadership is only defined if
you have power. Leadership always involves attempts on a leader to affect behavior or a follower in
a situation, whereas power is not equivalent with influence on another person's behavior. Although
power and leadership have similar meanings, they are certain differences that can point out what

Reward power is often common in the workplace when employees are praised from meeting goals
or deadlines, or just having doing something special for another coworker. Rewards can range
from gift cards, commission, pay raises or even promotions depending on the case. Everyone
likes being praised for their accomplishments, so this power is usually one of the common powers
in large organizations with a large amount of employees. (Abudi, 2011) As you can see having
power has more advantages than disadvantages, but one of the main problems is that you can
have the power and still not be an effective leader. When you have the authority, leaders often feel
that they can say anything to make the people believe that they are correct. Most of the time
people are blinded by the power, that they are often bamboozled to what is actually right. They
feel that people with power can do no wrong; they will always be fair and truthful, when most
who hold the power are not honest people at all. It goes to show you that just because you have
the power, it doesn't make you an effective leader, it just makes you the boss. Being in a situation
where you have worked hard and not given the credit, due to the fact that you have had a manager
with power that doesn't want you to excel is an obstacle that many people working in society face
today. So called leaders who hold their power

In response to the employees communicating freely with managers, the employees' are unlikely to be ignored, which is often the case in autocratic leadership when decisions are made by the managers, so that the needs and wants of employees could be met which will make for the motivation and may prevent disputes between the firm and employees (Kendra Cherry, 2012). In addition to that advantage, feedbacks from subordinates may help managers to identify potential problems in production or decision making and to fix them appropriately. Communication and leadership are the nonfinancial factors affecting the motivation of employees which has great impact on productivity and efficiency (Stimpson and Farquharson, 2012). Two–way communication encouraged by the democratic leadership will help the managers satisfy the employees and provide guidance for them to help with their tasks. Employees would feel their sense of belongings in the firm, and the friendly atmosphere in work place. According to the Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, the third level, social needs, are satisfied. Additionally, the democratic leader may pass obligations to the subordinates and authorize them to make their own decisions in a task, rather than just delegate the fixed task for them to finish without any flexibility, so that the employees may feel the responsibility about their task thus they will not reach full utility. Without the ability to use the mutual relationship of leadership to influence the motivators of followers, leaders stagnate and are limited by their own inability to accomplish all that must be for real change to occur. In less Rostonian terms (that is, based on Rost (1993)), without a motivated group of followers leaders are stranded and not achieving to a level of excellence. The first theory is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs that proposes man is motivated by a lack in the one or more of the five common needs. The needs that Maslow identifies are physiological, safety, social belonging, self–esteem, and self–actualization. Maslow believed that one fills needs from the most basic (like food and water) to the highest level (self–actualization). Maslow's ideas are easy to relate to and attempt to provide an all–inclusive approach to the concept of motivation; however, there is little evidence to support the idea that man cannot have self–actualization without the other more basic needs first satisfied. The second content theory Osland, et al. discuss is McCelland's learned needs. McCelland states that man is motivated by one of three things: achievement, power, or affiliation – or a mixture of the three. Each of these needs can possess a negative or positive connotation or implementation, but it is argued that people motivated by affiliation make better leaders. The third theory presented is McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y. McGregor asserts that Theory X people or employees are inherently lazy and must be controlled and forced to act, whereas Theory Y people are self–controlled, motivated, and ambitious. Steers, et al. (1996) identify an additional theory of motivation, which builds on Maslow's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Bova (2008) states that the following four characteristics are found in good leaders: they believe in open communication, they do not stick with the status quo, they are selective in what they measure, and they have passion for values and culture. Each characteristic is essential to a healthy organizational culture. When an employee feels he or she has open communication with a leader, they are more inclined to share if problems arise whether or not work related. Non–work related issues may eventually take a toll on an employee's performance at work. However, with open communication, an employee feels comfortable in apprising the leader of a situation so that future problems are avoided. Not all managers are leaders and not all leaders are managers. The biggest difference between management and leadership is people skills. In determining if a person is a leader or a manager, Bova (2008) lists some differences with which many a person would agree. One difference is that a manager directs people. Managers essentially tell employees to get the job done. Many people work on autopilot until their work shift ends. However, people will follow a leader. Leaders inspire others to want to strive for their best and to go beyond their normal duties. Another difference between managers and leaders is that managers tend to control or micromanage their department. Such management style causes employees to be unhappy and possibly rebel. Innovation should also not be confused with creativity, which is merely the generation of a novel idea that may not necessarily be put into operation, although these words are sometimes used interchangeably in research literature when speaking about innovation leadership. They exalt themselves in turf protection, fighting and controlling their followers instead of uplifting them. Toxic leaders are very destructive and they only focus on short term accomplishments and they destroy their followers to achieve those objectives. Many young women are refusing to accept the rule of "primogeniture" (Nelton, 1999). Primogeniture is defined as a birthright or an inheritance. Although women are making great strides in this arena, there is still the feeling out there that the son should be considered first and the daughter as a second option, only if there is no son or if the son declines the offer. But, Nelton says that, "young women by and large feel that if they want to go into the family business, the opportunity is there." In each of the cases described by Nelton, the fathers encouraged their daughters to become involved in the family business. As well, each father let his daughter run the show once she was named CEO–the surest sign of support (Nelton, 1999). In more and more families and in business in general, gender is becoming not an issue. As roles increasingly change on the home front, the business world will soon mirror the changes taking place in the family structure. Nelton also urges women in leadership roles to not lose sight of the bottom line. She says it is "easy for women to get caught up in the management of people" (Nelton, 1999).
