4. Overview of the Korean Automotive Industry
South Korea has the worlds fifth largest automotive Industry and the fifth largest
automobile export volume in the world. The Korean Auto Industry has been a key
factor in Koreas economic growth since the 1990’s.
The industry itself already contributes more than 10% to the national economy is areas
including employment, production and exports. The development of the Korean
automotive Industry can be understood in four steps that arguably began sometime
between the mid 50’s to early 60’s.
It began with the early growth phase during the 60’s to mid 70’s; followed by an rapid
growth phase until the early 80’s; then leading to further rapid growth and expansion
throughout the 80’s; and concluding with the asian economic crisis that came at the end
of the 90’s.

5. First Phase
During the mid 50’s to early 60’s, Korea was one of the worlds poorest
countries. Korea’s GDP per capita during this time was was only 10
percent of that of the United States and a growth rate of only 1
percent. A five year plant was implemented under the rule of Major
General Park Chung Hee in 1962 that helped began the growth of the
automotive industry. The plan placed a lot of priority for domestic
manufacturing of automobiles. To support this new growth, the
government prevented imported foreign vehicles to be sold
domestically however automobile parts was allowed to support the
domestic automotive industry. However, a dependence on foreign
automotive parts forced ment that Korean manufacturers only
consisted of semi- and fully knocked-down kits that were imported
from Japan and the United States. To end this dependence on foreign
companies, the government encouraged domestic research and
development for automotive products. With government support, this
led to the establishment of companies such as Hyundai Motor
Company. The aim for Hyundai was to be the first company to create
and develop the first Korean Car.
Second Phase
By the end of the 70’s, total production increased to over 200,000
units, with the domestic content ratio of automobiles being over 90
percent. With time, Korean automobiles improved in quality gaining
more acceptance globally. In addition, almost 100 million USD worth
of automobiles had been exported to over 67 countries by the start of
the 80’s. KIA’s Brisa pickup truck was the first Korean Automobile to
be exported to foreign markets. KIA also began strengthening its
international relationships by manufacturing Fiat and Peugeot vehicles
locally for foreign export.
