Disaster-prevention training for foreign residents
Sept. 21 from 9:00 a.m. to noon
at the Zama Fire Station Headquarters,
only a few minutes‟ walk from Camp Zama‟s Gate 1.

This training is organized
by Zama City and the Zama International Association,
with support from the Zama Fire Department
and Zama Disaster Volunteer Network.

During the training, participants will learn
how to prepare for large earthquakes, evacuation
and rescue procedures,
and how to use a fire distinguisher
and Automatic External Defibrillator.

Changes to USARJ Pamphlet 690-1
The “Supervisor‟s Handbook –
A Guide to Personnel Management Procedures
Pertaining to Local National Employees”
was recently updated to reflect three major changes
to the local national program.

Change No. 1:
Minimum Qualification Standards
– a set of qualification standards will be used
within U.S. Army in Japan
by the servicing Civilian Personnel Offices
to determine the applicant‟s qualification.

It is intended to screen applicants and identify
those who are likely to perform successfully
on the job and screen out
those who are not qualified.

Change No. 2:
Language Proficiency Level
– Levels of language proficiency
will be assigned to a position
based on the set duties and responsibilities
shown on the Position Description.

to a specific position means
that the incumbent cannot successfully perform
the duties of the position

without this level of language proficiency
and therefore becomes part of
the qualification requirement
that applicants need to meet.

Time in Grade – To prevent excessive
and rapid promotions, candidates
must meet the required period
in a grade to become eligible for promotion

Tips for Mold Prevention and Removal
As summer begins, the conditions for mold
growth become more prevalent.
Mold will only grow when moisture or condensation
is present.
Even hidden areas, like closets, can grow mold
if moisture is present.

Keeping your home free of moisture is the best way
to prevent mold growth.
Keep indoor humidity levels between 30 percent
and 50 percent. (Humidity meters can be purchased
for as little as $10 online)

Run fans and vents while cooking or showering.
(But don‟t leave them running all day, as this
can potentially assist mold growth).
Clean up moisture and condensation immediately.
Use dehumidifiers to further control levels of
humidity in the home.

Keep closet doors open one to two inches to allow
fresh air circulation.
If mold is present in an area of nine square feet or
less:
- Scrub rigorously using detergent and water
- Wear a dust mask, gloves and eye protection
- Dry the area after completion of cleaning

Household Goods Weight Allowance Change
Effective Dec. 1, 2011,
weight allowance to and from Japan was reduced
for all Soldiers to 2,500 pounds (net)
or 25 percent (net) of full weight allowance,
or whichever is greater.

Reminder of Pet Owners‟ Responsibilities
The following list of responsibilities for pet owners
living on Camp Zama, Sagamihara Family
Housing Area and Sagami Depot was released
by the Housing Management Division:
- Sponsors are responsible for cleaning the areas
used by their pets.
- If kept outside, the pet‟s area must be policed daily
to prevent a buildup of trash and fecal material.

- Owners must clean up waste left by their pet
during walks.
- Fecal droppings must be disposed of in sealed
plastic bags (preferably double bags) and be
placed in garbage receptacles.
- Un-bagged waste must not be placed in garbage
receptacles.

This class is given by Preventive Medicine
every third Wednesday of the month

Shelf-Life Training
A number of training dates are scheduled
to be held, in both English- and Japanese-language
instruction, on shelf-life policy training
to explain standard practice in the management
and storage of shelf-life material at the
managing activity and depot level.

Shelf-Life Training
Students will learn to properly apply mandatory
storage standards criteria in evaluating the condition
of shelf-life material upon receipt,
in storage, during surveillance,
upon shipment, and when test or restorative
actions are required to maintain or return stocks
to a ready-for-issue status.

Informational Telephone Services
Effective April 1, the 78th Signal Battalion's
telephone operators will no longer provide
"informational telephone services“
between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Calls placed to 0, 263-1110 and 113
during these hours will be routed to the Regional Network
Operations Support Center, whose
operators have access to telephone information.

essential tool for meeting that challenge.
