Sandalwood is a main ingredient in perfumes,
incense, lotions and body oils.
For over 2000 years it is one of the most important
perfume materials used in Asia.
Valued for its spiritual and medicinal qualities
and is considered the most sacred of all trees used
as an important part of devotional rituals and
religious practices.
Sandalwood has been used by humans as oil,
scented burning sticks and aromatic carving wood
for centuries.
Due to the slow growing nature of the sandalwood
tree and the high demand for its heartwood
properties it is the second most expensive legal
wood.
5. What is Heartwood?
The prized properties of the
sandalwood tree are concentrated in
the heartwood. Heartwood can be
defined as "the inner most and oldest
wood, no longer functional for water
transport and food storage, often
characterized by colored deposits of
resinous, phenolic and other
compounds which are frequently
associated with enhanced durability"
6. Sandalwood Various Use
The active ingredients in sandalwood are
santalols, these compounds have anti-bacterial
activity, treatment of skin cancer.
Extracts of sandalwood have also been used to treat
urinary infections.
Used internally in chronic bronchitis, a few drops on
sugar giving relief; also in gonorrhea and gleets; in
chronic cystitis, with benzoic and boric acids.
Much used as a perfume for different purposes.
The wood is used for making fancy articles, natural skin
care products, toothpaste, body soaps, medicines.
Sandalwood also aids in the stimulation of the growth of
white blood.
In Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood has been used for
respiratory and urinary infections and for the
revitalization of skin; in Chinese Medicine, sandalwood
has been used for skin complaints, stomachache and
vomiting.
7. Sandalwoods Crafts
Sandalwood can be finely carved and has a
beautiful scent. The most common carvings are
of Hindu Gods.
Hindu pilgrims might buy one of these figures as
a souvenir when they have visited a shrine.
Sandalwood is also made into animal figures,
boxes, cabinets, trays, chess sets and even
walking sticks.
Sandalwood is also used for a variety of small
carved articles, such as boxes, cabinet panels,
jewel cases, combs, picture frames, fan handles,
pen holders and card cases etc.
8. Sandalwood Benefits
Sandalwood scent is believed to transform one's
desires and maintain a person's alertness while
in meditation. Sandalwood is also one of the
more popular scents used for incense used when
offering incense to the Buddha.
Sandalwood Essential Oil one of the most widely
used of all essential oils around the world.
Today sandalwood essential oils is considered in
aromatherapy to be considered effective in
treating dry skin, general skin irritation and
acne. It may also help in the treatment of
bronchitis, catarrh, dry persistent coughs,
laryngitis as well as sore throats. It may also
help in to relieve diarrhea, nausea and some
cases of cystitis.
9. Sandalwood Growing
Cultivation of sandalwood profitable investment.
Grow under varying conditions of soil ph from 5.0 to 7.5.
Indian Environmental conditions favors growth.
Sandalwood is a parasitic plant so it requires host plants
to partner with. It is dependent on these host plants for
its nutrients and water demands to achieve and sustain
healthy growth.
Nursery raised host seedlings such as Curry leaves or
other suitable plant should be planted first followed by
direct seeding of the Sandalwood nuts adjacent to these
established hosts.
Sandalwood is dependent on other plants for minerals
and water, but still needs sunlight to make its own
sugars, which is why it has green leaves despite having
roots which attach themselves to the roots of other
plants.
The trees need a lot of light, and are easily overgrown.
11. Global Warming
Global warming is the increase in the average
temperature of Earth's near-surface air and
oceans since the mid-20th century and its
projected continuation. Most of the observed
temperature increase since the middle of the
20th century has been caused by increasing
concentrations of greenhouse gases, which
result from human activity such as the
burning of fossil fuel and deforestation.
12. Demand and Supply
The scope for cultivation for sandalwood is very much
encouraging, since there is wide gap between supply and
demand.
Sandalwood has two primary uses: extraction of an
essential oil, and as a source of wood for carving.
The heartwood of the trunk, main branches and roots is
used in essential oil distillation.
The sapwood is used for carving. Sandalwood is much
prized as a wood. In India, the sapwood is used for wood
turning, particularly toy making.
sandalwood is one of the essential oils which improve
with age and because of increased demand the price of
the oil has begun to increase significantly each year.
It is believed that the best quality of the Santalum Album
oil comes from the India.
