5. COMMON DISINFECTANTS
Chlorine based – the most common disinfectant
Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO)
Calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2)
Liquid chlorine
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl)
Alcohol (ethanol/iso-propyl alcohol) based
Hydrogen per-oxide
Ozone
Sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach) is the most
commonly used
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
5
6. Sodium Hypochlorite (Hypo)
Generally available in concentrated form (~10-
12% available chlorine)
Tend to disintegrate on coming in contact with
air
Not human friendly;
People exposed to hypo by inhalation of aerosols
causes coughing and a sore throat
After swallowing hypo the effects are stomach ache,
a burning sensation, coughing, diarrhoea, a sore
throat and vomiting
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
6
7. Sodium Hypochlorite (Hypo) …
Hypo, on skin or eyes, causes redness and pain
After prolonged exposure, the skin can become
sensitive
Hypo is poisonous for water organisms
Hypo is mutagenic and very toxic when it comes in
contact with ammonium salts
safety measures have to be taken to protect workers
and the environment while working with hypo
Hypochlorites are very sensitive to organic matter
in the water and thus lose their germicidal powers
faster
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
7
8. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)
Hypochlorous acid – WBC produce in our body
(as first step of immune response trigger)
Because of relatively low molecular weight and
no charge, it is better able than the other
chlorine based disinfectants to penetrate the
microbial cell walls
Vastly superior disinfectant – 80-100 times
more powerful than the sodium hypochlorite
requiring lesser concentration and contact time to
achieve desired level of disinfection
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
8
9. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) …
Lot more hypochlorite is needed to achieve the
same antimicrobial power as hypochlorous acid
It is non-toxic, non-irritant, and non-corrosive at
proper usage concentrations
Some of the use of hypochlorous acid also
include eye, wound healing and veterinary care
products

Alcohols can cause skin dryness, irritation, rashes, itching,
inflammation, and even cracking. Besides, alcohol
evaporates too quickly and, may, provide temporary
sterilization effect
Commercial sodium hypochlorite, despite of its strong
disinfecting ability: the higher its concentration, the
greater it harms our bodies (e.g. irritating our eyes, skin
and respiratory systems)
Food Grade, HOCL is recognised as food disinfectant by
FDA (USA)
HOCl has been identified by the Japanese Ministry of
Health as having bactericidal function on food and
additives
12. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) …
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
12
✅ Alcohol Free, Fragrance Free, Colorant Free, Rinse Free,
Non-Sticky, Non-Toxic, All Natural, Eco Friendly, Animal
and Child Friendly
✅ Its multipurpose usage allows it to be sprayed on the
desired surface to be sterilized, such as, hands, body,
clothing, toys, mobile phones, tableware, air, toilets, etc.
✅ Absolutely healthy and safe, non-toxic and alcohol-free,
mild and non-irritating, so pregnant women and babies can
use it with confidence
✅ Disinfection: Disinfects floors, kitchen counters, carpets,
car seats, pushchairs, high chairs, toys, play area, mobile
phones, shopping trolleys, door knobs, sports & gym
equipment, office desks, cinemas, bathrooms etc.
13. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) …
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
13
✅ Deodorant: Neutralizes bad odour such as cigarette
smoke, athlete foot, shoes, gym equipment, pets, litter
boxes, garbage, sewage, vomit and many more
✅ Disinfection potential of HOCl is 80-100 times higher than
that of Sodium Hypochlorite with same concentration
(lower concentration and contact time produces better
results)
✅ Kills more than 99.99% of bacteria, germs and virus!
Thoroughly performs sterilization and sanitization
✅ HOCl gets reduced to “water” after every “action” making
it harmless to human bodies and environment
✅ Hypochlorous acid is so gentle that it has several uses in
the healthcare and medical space
14. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) …
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
14
✅ It can be used to wash vegetables and fruits without any
damage to them
✅ It kills the bacteria in raw meat, fish, etc., without
changing their smell and flavour
✅ It does not produce any unpleasant odour
✅ It can be produced on-site from natural ingredients like salt
✅ As it can be freshly prepared every day, it’s consistency
can be easily maintained
✅ It does not contain any other added chemical which may
have harmful effects
✅ The disinfectant can be stored for a reasonable time
without it loosing its strength.
15. Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) …
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
15
✅ The hypochlorous acid is produced at near neutral (slightly
lower than neutral) pH. So, it is non-corrosive on metal
and other surfaces.
✅ It does not leave traces/residues on surfaces
✅ It is safe on plants, if sprayed on them, unlike other
chemical disinfectants (which if not properly diluted will
kill the plants)
16. Hypochlorous Acid – Production
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
16
Until recently it has not been possible to create
hypochlorous acid in a stable solution with a usable
shelf life
Through electro-chlorination process (which
generates sodium hypo-chlorite when common salt
is used as input), with proprietary salt combination,
the hypochlorous acid can be produced on-site at
the concentration which can be easily controlled
Use of titanium based electrolyser – ensures long life
of electrodes (> 5 years)
Both continuous and batch systems available

Hypochlorous acid is a weak acid
At a pH of between 5-6, the chlorine species is nearly
100% hypochlorous acid (HOCl)
Desirable pH is 6-6.5, in which about 90% is HOCl
and remaining is hypochlorite
The maximum achievable concentration is 0.8%
For majority of disinfection applications, a
concentration of ~1000 ppm is most desirable.
Custom configurations/capacities to suit differing
requirements is possible
18. Hypochlorous Acid Generator
Chemical Disinfection - Use of
Hypochlorous Acid
18
HypoHome: Generator for small clinics, shops, homes,
etc.) – 1 litre/batch (~10 minutes)
HypoGen: Batch type disinfectant generator for higher
capacities) – 80-3360 litre/day (~1000 ppm effective
chlorine)
HypoInstagen: Instant type disinfectant generator) –
50-200 litre/hour (~1000 ppm effective chlorine)
