presenting an idea and assessing what responses it gets. In the
1950s/60s in the US, it was associated with an occupation, and
comedians used it to mock corporate culture.

him.

Initially introduced as a rodenticide, Warfarin is one of the most
prescribed anti-coagulant drugs in the US for preventing blood clots.
One of the possible effects of overdose is a steep spike in blood
pressure, which can lead to a stroke, with stomach hemorrhage being
another key indicator—in the early 1950s, these symptoms were
exhibited by someone, which led to an urgent call to Felix Dadaev to
be ready and available.
In a couple of days, it all ended and the final report never mentioned
stomach hemorrhage leading to speculation that the person in
question was done in by foul means using Warfarin.

This company is named after the southernmost province of Sweden—
a peninsula and a number of small islands around it.
It makes several products but is a pioneer in one particular area—it
produced the DLa Special, with a 24-metre detachable ladder, back in
1912 when the rather inefficient method of choice to transport the
water was to use horse-drawn wagons.
The company later innovated with turntable-based elevating

The modern pentathlon has no reason to exist, other than that Pierre
de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, thought it should.
Like its predecessor, Coubertin made the modern version based on
military tasks. The idea, he said, was to produce the “ideal, complete
athlete, or at least someone capable of being a highly-functioning
soldier.”
What was done to the rules of one of the five disciplines, to bring
the conditions as close to a real-life battle as possible, and make the
athlete expect the unexpected?

The BBC Radio Shipping Forecast is broadcast four times a day. For the
purpose of the reports, the waters around the British Isles is divided
into 31 sea areas, and the wind speed, direction etc. is announced for
each of those areas.

Only one of them is named after a person—a graduate of the Royal
Naval Academy, he was an able surveyor and expert hydrographer.

The pattern to the left originated in the Sassanid dynasty in the 16th
century. In that period and after, it was used to decorate royal regalia,
court garments, as well as textiles used by the general population.
While the design itself is originally Persian, the name by which we know it
is of Scottish origin—from the town in Scotland where they were

The other one, characterised by abstract four-pointed shapes, originated in
woven wool cloth of the Scottish Lowlands. It is a common design in casual

The first New York City Marathon—in 1970—was organized at a small scale
by Fred Lebow and Vince Chiappetta. There were only 127 entrants, of
which only 55 men finished; the sole female entrant dropped out due to

In subsequent planning Lebow wanted to use the marathon as a way of
promoting the city and celebrating its diversity. He realised that the first
race did not receive enough publicity due to a major flaw. The 1976 race
took the first step in correcting this.
