This book by ‘Shark’ Daymond John chronicles how
he built a brand in the early 1990s with his
partners; the brand name was an acronym; when
expanded, it evoked a sense of ownership and
connect, especially with the African-American
community in the US. Which brand, now
rebranded in the US as FB Legacy?
Which current Bollywood actor got his nickname,
apparently due to his appearance in the younger
days where he would wear jerseys made by this
brand, which were the only ones that fit him?

This phrase is now a cliché and is used in the (corporate) context of
presenting an idea and assessing what responses it gets. In the
1950s/60s in the US, it was associated with an occupation, and
comedians used it to mock corporate culture.
A comedy album in 1961, took the phrase literally and had George
Washington uttering it after he receives something from Betsy Ross.
We also heard the phrase in 1957 as an ice-breaker used by #12 in a
group of impatient people; probably quite appropriate, given #12’s
occupation.
What’s the phrase and what was #12’s occupation?

In 1815, this English physician invented the log log slide rule, which
included a scale displaying the logarithm of the logarithm that allowed
the user to directly perform calculations involving roots and exponents.
His most famous work had an even greater utility to people and much
more detail.
It started in 1805 as a personal project, and was compiled and released
to the public in 1852, with 1000 concepts split into six sections relating
to abstract relations, space, matter, ideas, volition and morals. The
number of sections was a reflection of his obsession with symmetry
and tribute to a man he considered his scientific hero.
Who and what work? Who/what was the tribute to?

Square Root of a Sonnet is a recent play based on Empire of the Stars
by Arthur I Miller. The story begins with a young man, at the age of 19,
making a presentation to the Royal Astronomical Society in
Jan 1935. While many of the attendees are impressed, the most
famous scientist there, who the latter chooses as a mentor, ridicules
him.
The story further explores the continued rejection of his theories in
public, and the Cambridge scientist’s attitude, which ends up delaying
research and credit to the young man by nearly four decades.

Naming of the Dead by Ian Rankin is set in Edinburgh in July 2005
amidst the events of the controversial G8 summit that happened
in reality. The summit was held at a hotel and golf course, 80 kms

The same location played host to a historic agreement 28 years

Minarchism is a libertarian political philosophy espousing minimal
intervention of the state. One of the key tenets of minarchism is the
concept of the _____ ___________ state.
According to this, the only roles that the state must play is the
prevention of theft, crime and fraud, and therefore the only legitimate
institutions would be the military, police and court.
The term was originally coined in order to mock the concept of a
limited government, but became a model for laissez-faire capitalism.

prescribed anti-coagulant drugs in the US for preventing blood clots.
One of the possible effects of overdose is a steep spike in blood
pressure, which can lead to a stroke, with stomach hemorrhage being
another key indicator—in the early 1950s, these symptoms were

The earliest accounts of this action/activity date back to the 1920s, closely tied to
the history of the objects it was directed at. Considered very American, the Great
Crash of 1929, saw a rise in the popularity of this activity, as more out-of-work
youngsters started moving out of their hometowns.
In 1934, Peter Warne proclaimed himself an expert in this activity, stating that he
had mastered the technique and was going to write a book called The __________
Hail about it; in fact, he was quite unsuccessful at it, and it is his companion who
memorably proved that “the limb is mightier than the thumb”.
Another famous example was Tom Joad, who, in 1939, did this after being released

that has had mathematicians hooked for many years. In 1890, it was
proven that no more than five were needed, but proving the four took a lot
more time.
In 1970, Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Hakken wrote code that parsed 2000

sufficed. Sadly, their effort was greeted with scepticism and did not receive

Like its predecessor, Coubertin made the modern version based on

Historians identify four possible occasions when this has happened, either
partially or completely. The most cited one is during Julius Caesar’s time in
48 BC.
The others are the attack of Aurelian in AD 270–275; through a decree of
Coptic Pope Theophilus in 391 AD; and during the Muslim conquest of
Egypt in (or after) AD 642.
The building/location involved was set up around 300 years before Caesar,
