About Second Life®<br />Around since 2003<br />It is a 3-D virtual world that is almost entirely built by its residents. <br />Free to join and use, but it needs some dollars to rent or purchase “land”<br />Content is user-generated, which gives it much power and flexibility – especially for educators<br />Thousands of educators from around the world are now actively using 3-D virtual worlds such as Second Life™ for teaching classes, doing research, holding virtual office hours and other meetings, and running student projects.<br />
Methods of communication in SL<br />Voice (like Skype) – public and private conversations, both group and one-on-one<br />Chat and Instant Messaging - public and private conversations, both group and one-on-one<br />Notecards (text only)<br />Scripted interactive devices of all kinds<br />

3-D engineering simulation<br />Memorial University Shipyard<br />Won award in 2009 from the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education<br />Students in a marine engineering course were provided with a space to build a virtual shipyard.<br />They met online and walked through the build to assess its functionality.<br />If things didn’t work, they went back and re-designed and re-built<br />
