  6. 6. wav <ul><li>short for waveform audio format , also known as Audio for Windows , mostly used in PC </li></ul><ul><li>uncompressed audio format, provides the best quality but in return, the file size is the biggest among the other formats </li></ul><ul><li>CD album uses wav as data storing method </li></ul><ul><li>Too large in file size for “Internet streaming” and podcast </li></ul>
  7. 7. wma <ul><li>Windows Media Audio which is developed by Microsoft </li></ul><ul><li>compressed file, file size: about 1/15 smaller than wav but with similar quality </li></ul><ul><li>can be for storage or for “Internet streaming” </li></ul><ul><li>compatible to all Microsoft products and popular editing software: Adobe Premiere, Ulead Studio </li></ul><ul><li>not compatible to any Apple products: Mac, iPod and iPhone etc </li></ul><ul><li>Mobile phones are now designing to playback wma, e.g. Nokia </li></ul><ul><li>Windows Movie Maker can convert wav to wma </li></ul>

Demo and hands-on <ul><li>If you want to produce simple wma, windows movie maker is the best choice </li></ul><ul><li>If you want to produce sound file mixing narration with music, and the file can be compatible to Internet users, Audacity software and mp3 file format might be more appropriate </li></ul>

What is Podcasting? <ul><li>A podcast is a series of digital media files, either audio or video, that is released episodically and downloaded through web syndication (Wikipedia, 2009) </li></ul><ul><li>Developed from the term “broadcast” and by means of i-pod. But now it is not necessary to use i-pod family </li></ul><ul><li>One of the commonly used platform for podcasting: iTunes </li></ul><ul><ul><li>iTunes is developed to manage your i-pod/iTouch/iPhone resources </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>It can be installed in PC platform for media file management </li></ul></ul>

Limitation of iTunes <ul><li>wma is not supported, it only supports mp3 and other Mac platform audio formats </li></ul><ul><li>You need an Apple account to upload materials </li></ul><ul><ul><li>In creating Apple account , you will be asked to submit credit card information </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>iTunes U is created at US site, no iTunes U has ever been created in Hong Kong site </li></ul></ul><ul><li>i.e. iTunes is a good platform for getting global resources, but not ready for uploading local resources </li></ul>

How to link the audio file to Blackboard <ul><li>It is not recommended to upload the audio file directly to Blackboard </li></ul><ul><li>You need to create a video account from ITS video server (contact person: Rocky Yip of ITS) </li></ul><ul><li>Then save your audio file into ITS video server, a ftp link will be produced </li></ul><ul><li>Then create the audio hyperlink in the Blackboard module </li></ul>

Some remarks for saving file to ITS server <ul><li>It only accepts wmv, just simply change the file name from wma to wmv </li></ul><ul><li>The file name should be without space, for example: “learning english.wma” should be changed to “learningenglish.wmv” </li></ul><ul><li>After uploading the file to the ITS video server, your audio file address link would be </li></ul><ul><li>mms:// wmvideo.ied.edu.hk/citie/filename.wmv </li></ul><ul><li>“ citie” is your dept or project name given by ITS </li></ul><ul><li>“ filename” is your file name </li></ul><ul><li>Just copy this link to Blackboard, your students can then listen to the audio file created by you </li></ul>
