How is waste
treated???

BY RALI IVAILOVA, NIKOL ANDREEVA AND
NADIA SPASOVA
When it comes to waste treatment Bulgaria isn’t
doing so well. In the EU Bulgaria has
the second lowest waste treatment , and
worst is only Greece.
The 1.25 million people who live in Sofia are ser to
benefit from a major project which will deliver a
modern , integrated municipal waste management
system.
Bulgaria is a country, that faces serious waste
management challenges.
The current infrastructure is old, fractional and
insufficient. Addressing the issue constitutes a major
priority for the Bulgarian government and the planned
areas for development
According to official data from the Ministry of
Environment and Water, the state’s gross waste output
accounts to more than 2.5 million metric tons on a
year basis.
Industrial waste represents approximately 70% of the
total waste generated, municipal waste accounts for
25% and the remaining 5% is hazardous waste.
In 1991, the German government passed a packaging
law that requires manufacturers to take care of the
recycling or disposal of any packaging material they sell.

As a result of this law, German industry set up a
"dual system" of waste collection , which picks up
household packaging in parallel to the existing
municipal waste-collection systems.
This industry-funded system is operated in Germany
by DSD.DSD only collects packaging material from
manufacturers who pay a license fee to DSD.
DSD license fee payers can then add the Green Dot logo
to their package labeling to indicate that this package
should be placed into the separate yellow bags or yellow
wheelie bins that will then be collected and emptied by
DSD-operated waste
collection vehicles and sorted in DSD facilities.
An important method of waste management is the
prevention of waste material being created, also known
as waste reduction. Methods of avoidance include reuse
of second-hand products, repairing broken items
instead of buying new, designing products to be
refillable or reusable, encouraging consumers to avoid
using disposable products , removing any food/liquid
remains from cans and packaging , and designing
products that use less material to achieve the same
purpose.
