Raise one hand in the air as high as you can. Now do it 2 “ higher. Difference between our potential and our self discipline. Has anyone told you that you have potential. That’s great and I don’t want to diminish that praise. But, you can’t eat potential. The world is full of unhappy people who once had a lot of potential. Richest place in the world is a cemetery as it is fillled with ideas, and unrealized potential. People over 25: hands up. Keep your hand up if you know you could have achieved more than you have so far. So today’s message is for you too.Your job is to move out of potential and into action to realize that potential. What I want to do today is to give you some tools to help you realize that potential.
Put your hand up if you’d like to get rich? What about getting rich quick? You can if quick means 10 years. Why?Because you don’t know enough yet!
And it will take you 10 years to learn and then apply all that you need to get there. And by the way, when I say rich, I mean rich in wealth, health and happiness. You need to learn in all of these areas. So, one of your main jobs here at Seneca isn’t just to learn the content you will be taught, but also to learn how to learn. To start developing the habits that will serve you throughout your life. Martial arts: Black belt means you are beginning to learn how to fight. Graduation from here means you are now ready to learn how to succeed.
How do you get there?
Every successful person has had a clear vision of the kind of life they want
Having a clear vision with a strong Why keeps you motivated when things get tough. When you are in school and you have those 8 assignments due, if you focus on what you “have” to do, it will seem like a chore, a burden that you won’t like and the experience will be less enjoyable. On the other hand, if you focus on what you are going to get for yourself in the long haul, you will be excited that completion of these task takes you one step closer to that dream life. So, before your first day of class, get clear on what you want and why. Write it down. A goal that isn’t written down is just a wish lacking commitment. This is one of those trust me things...Writing it down makes a big difference.
In my view, this is the most important for you. Let me make this crystal clear. Your success will grow to the extent you do. If you don’t grow, neither will your income, your happiness, your health. You have to work on you.Let me show you in a very simple and linear way what I mean.
At 20, you are 1020 weeks in, which is over 25% of the way there. Make each one count.
What if a professor is unfair? Do you quit? No, you act. What if a course is really tough? You act. What if you are having a tough time. Get help from peers, from tutors, from your professor. You choose your outcomes. When people engage in below the line activity it is because they don’t really care enough about the result.Burn this formula into your skull
Don’t take things so seriously. Make a commitment to be happy right now, as right now is all you’ve got. Give a high 5 and say, You deserve to be happy.
Raise your hand if you are an entrepreneur?Let me try that again. Raise your hand if you want to get paid for what you do?OK, then you are an entrepreneur. This is the single biggest mindset shift you need to take on. Think of yourself as a corporation of 1. If you are a customer of a company, what do you want? Service, proactivity, going above and beyond. Anticipating my needs. Communicating with me. And if I do all of those things, you will be loyal to me right? Your employer is your client. The more value you provide, the more value and security you will receive. Quite simply, we live in a value for value economy. If you think about how to maximize the value you provide, before you worry about your compensation, you will wind up well compensated. AS a corporation of 1, your goal is to make your client value you, never want to deal with anyone else but you and to give you glowing referrals if you ever do go somewhere else. And most importantly, you want them to be willing to continue to invest in your development so that you can fulfill your potential. Too many new employees act as if they deserve a lot. But do you want to know the hard truth. When you walk out of here into your first job, you are more a cost than a benefit. Employer is investing in you in hopes of gaining after you are good. So, if you have the attitude of pay me first, give me my benefits first, give me the best working hours first, then I’ll work, you won’t get very far. If you’re attitude is that I will only work 9-5, you are saying that you aren’t willing to invest in your own learning and that you aren’t committed to the outcomes of the company. So, instead, think first about how to maximize the value you provide. Be on time, be proactive, be honest, take on responsibility, listen with humility, give respect without kissing butt and show that you are keen to learn.
So BE: the corporation of 1/ Be responsible, be proactive, be a learner, be a value provider and be committed to your vision for your life.
Participation increases retention and also builds a habit of success. You will be happier and wealthier in all things if you participate fully. Do the Have to exercise. On time: It may seem like no big deal here, but punctuality is one of the critical keys to success. Woody Allen once said 90% of success is showing up. I tell you developing the habit of being on time will set you aside from most others. It communicates that you are reliable and are a person of integrity. Not being on time says to everyone else that you feel inconveniencing others is fine with you and that you put yourself above others. Think about the people who showed up late here today. Develop the habit of serving others. Why? Givers gain.
If you could accompany me on every meeting with every client for 6 months and hear about all the different challenges businesses from all industries face and what solutions work and don’t work for them, but get $2000/month or work for a top paying employer in your industry in an entry level position reporting to someone who has been out of school for 3 years and get paid $8000/month, which would be the better opportunity. Why? Because you would learn a ton that would make yourself more valuable. The best advice I can give you is to not look for the employer who will pay you the most, but for the one at which you will learn the most. But learn about the stuff that will make you more valuable. Jim Rohn: Where you will be in 5 years will be determined by the books you read and the people you hang out with. The most successful person I personally know has read a book a week since he was 15 years old. Marshmallow test: delayed gratification. Einstein: one of the most powerful forces in the universe is compound interest. Contribute: not only for wealth creation but for meaning in life. Leave this world a little better than you found it and you will live a life that has mattered and that will be rewarding
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice.
