- These slides show how over the last 100 years the profile of Scotland has changed. 100 years ago – a pyramid with few older people and large numbers in work to fund support and care. In 20 years time – we will have more older people than people in work. This shift means we need to shift the way we organise and deliver and pay for care.
- And while the impact is gradually building over the next 20 years – we are feeling it now, and will feel it every year going forward. So, in 6 years time a 25% increase in demand for services – it doesn’t seem viable under the current arrangements.
- The growth in demand due to demographic shifts needs to be seen alongside the financial projections for the next few years. So, is it realistic to think we can find an additional 22% of budget for health and social care for older people while at the same time public sector finances are set to fall by at least 10% - and probably more

- Issues faced by HIV positive older people and older people are the same in many instances, however the pressure are much more acute on issues such as (i) care (ii) money and employment (iii) failing physical health (iv) mental health, loneliness and support (v) discrimination
