This document is a weekly newsletter from the Woodinville Community United Methodist Church (WCUMC) dated July 20, 2014. It provides a summary of the church's sermon series on Acts, announcements for upcoming church events, a financial snapshot, and prayer requests. The sermon for this week focuses on Acts 8 and discusses how Philip preached the good news of Jesus in Samaria and to an Ethiopian man he encountered. The newsletter also advertises upcoming events like an all-church family retreat in August and a production of "Snoops" by the church's Kidshine program.

âGodâs Spirit-Filled Peopleâ
A Sermon Series on Acts
âSharing the Good News of
Jesus Christâ
Acts 8
Acts 8:5-8
Philip went down to a city in Samaria and began to preach Christ to
them. The crowds were united by what they heard Philip say and the
signs they saw him perform, and they gave him their undivided
attention. With loud shrieks, unclean spirits came out of many people,
and many who were paralyzed or crippled were healed. There was great
rejoicing in that city.
Where the truth of Christâs Good News is preached⊠amazing things
happen!!
Acts 8:14-25
When Simon perceived that the Spirit was given through the laying on of
the apostlesâ hands, he offered them money. He said, âGive me this
authority too so that anyone on whom I lay my hands will receive the
Holy Spirit.â Peter responded, âMay your money be condemned to hell
along with you because you believed you could buy Godâs gift with
money! You can have no part or share in Godâs word because your heart
isnât right with God. Therefore, change your heart and life! Turn from
your wickedness! Plead with the Lord in the hope that your wicked intent
can be forgiven, for I see that your bitterness has poisoned you and evil
2. has you in chains.â Simon replied, âAll of you, please, plead to the Lord
for me so that nothing of what you have said will happen to me!â After
the apostles had testified and proclaimed the Lordâs word, they returned
to Jerusalem, preaching the good news to many Samaritan villages along
the way.
Repentance and authentic change is evident in the hearts and lives of
true believers!
Acts 8:26-40
An angel from the Lord spoke to Philip, âAt noon, take the road that
leads from Jerusalem to Gaza.â (This is a desert road.) So he did.
Meanwhile,
an Ethiopian man was on his way home from Jerusalem, where he had
come to worship. He was a eunuch and an official responsible for the
entire treasury of Candace. (Candace is the title given to the Ethiopian
queen.)
He was reading the prophet Isaiah while sitting in his carriage. The
Spirit told Philip, âApproach this carriage and stay with it.â Running up
to the carriage, Philip heard the man reading the prophet Isaiah. He
asked, âDo you really understand what you are reading?â The man
replied, âWithout someone to guide me, how could I?â Then he invited
Philip to climb up and sit with him. This was the passage of scripture he
was reading: Like a sheep he was led to the slaughterâšand like a lamb
before its shearer is silentâšso he didnât open his mouth. In his
humiliation
justice was taken away from him.âšWho can tell the story of his
descendantsâšbecause his life was taken from the earth?
The eunuch asked Philip, âTell me, about whom does the prophet say
this? Is he talking about himself or someone else?â Starting with that
passage, Philip proclaimed the good news about Jesus to him. As they
went down the road, they came to some water. The eunuch said, âLook!
Water! What would keep me from being baptized?â He ordered that the
carriage halt. Both Philip and the eunuch went down to the water, where
Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Lordâs
Spirit suddenly took Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but
went on his way rejoicing. Philip found himself in Azotus. He traveled
through
that area, preaching the good news in all the cities until he reached
Caesarea.
God calls us to make ourselves available, to approach others with care
and concern, allowing them to invite us into their lives. Itâs then that
we can share the Good News of Jesus Christ in a fruitful and
meaningful way.

For Personal or Group Reflection
3. 1. Think of the people in your life who have shared the Good News of
Jesus with you. What is memorable about their character? Why?
2. The Samaritans were considered outcasts by the Jews. Why would
Peter and John come to them? Why did the Father delay pouring out the
Holy Spirit until they got there? What lesson does that teach us?
3. How does Simonâs reaction to the apostles in vs. 18-19 show his
misunderstanding about the Gospel? Explain.
4. Reflect on Philipâs interaction with the Ethiopian man. How does this
story cause you to reflect on how to relate to others in your own life?
