During Helitech 2016 Leonardo Helicopters Division held a presentation called "Technology for Safety" focused on:
- Ergonomics & Human Machine Interface;
- Dry Run Transmission Capabilities;
- Design to Performance;
- OGP standards compliance across different roles.
9. Ergonomics: Visibility and Situation Awareness
Cockpit layout designed to provide outstanding external visibility and the best
situation awareness

10. The HTAWS displays the aircraft position with respect to the
surrounding terrain and obstacles. TSO-C151 Compliant, 3 arc/sec
Terrain database resolution.
Ergonomics: Situational Awareness
11. Ergonomics: Situational Awareness
The SVS provides a computer-generated 3D representation of the
external environment, i.e. terrain shape, obstacles, runways and
helipads. Use same HTAWS Terrain database.
12. Ergonomics: Situational Awareness
The EVS (LWIR sensor) provides the thermal representation of
the area in front of the aircraft enhancing the vision capability in
low visibility conditions (night, haze, smoke, smog, light fog,
etc.)
13. Ergonomics: Obstacle Proximity LiDAR System
OPLS inform the pilots and the crew members about the presence of
short range obstacles like rocks, trees and buildings during low speed
operations.
Visual and audio guidance is based on aircraft safety margin, computed
between obstacle profile and the blades profile.

14. Ergonomics: Obstacle Warning System - LOAM
Enhance Pilot situational awareness
when focused on mission target and
increase its reaction time
Increase safety of flight
Detect obstacle on flight path
Helicopter trajectory estimation

18. The AW189 can fly in dry run conditions for at least 100 nm,
and this distance increases with the reduction of the helicopter
weight.
The AW189 certified capacity allows crews to plan diversions in
case of dry run condition with the possibility to reach the coast
or safer areas for the intervention of rescue teams

27. CONCLUSIONS
Modern design and new technologies can
make the difference in tough situations
New instruments to enhance situation
awareness are already certified and
available: require them!
Spreading of safety culture is a must!
