Over the last six years, Galois has been developing the Haskell Lightweight Virtual Machine, or HaLVM, a lightweight virtual machine that runs directly on the Xen hypervisor. The HaLVM's design is based on a notion of minimalism: Authors of HaLVM domains include only those libraries and features they require, allowing the HaLVM to have a very small initial resource footprint that scales in a very obvious fashion. In doing so, we hope to combine the minimalism and flexibility of a small kernel with an extended set of libraries with the simplicity and reliability of the strongly typed, high-level language Haskell. While initially designed for running operating system design experiments, the HaLVM has grown over time to be a suitable platform for writing simple network appliances with a very narrow resource footprint. This work has been enabled by other Galois projects: a TCP-compliant network stack written in Haskell, and a fairly-complete file system written in Haskell. In the end, because we use Haskell and provide these libraries at the Haskell level, programmers can create complex software structures quickly, easily, and with the added assurance that the Haskell type system provides. In this talk, we will provide an overview of the HaLVM and its design principles - pointing out where the HaLVM shines and where it is weak - and continue with some of our experiences using it over the last six years.

Ever wondered about all the new Cloud offerings out there? What is a PaaS? What is this thing Garner keeps calling xPaaS? How can I as a beginner get started in a few hours? Whether your business is running on applications based on Java EE6, PHP or Ruby, the cloud is turning out to be the perfect environment for developing your business. There are plenty of clouds and platform-as-a-services to choose from, but where to start? Join us for three action-packed hours of power where we'll show you how to deploy your existing application written in the language of your choice - Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl or Python, with the project of your choice - jBPM, Ceylon, Switchyard, Drools Planner, Aerogear, GateIn, Drools (Rules / BPM) and more deployed into the OpenShift PaaS in just minutes. All this and without having to rewrite your app to get it to work the way the cloud provider thinks your app should work. If you want to learn about xPaaS and see how investing just a few hours of your time can change everything you thought you knew about putting your business applications in the cloud, this session is for you! Mobile edge computing delivers cloud computing at the edge of the cellular network to drive services quality and innovation. The ability for CSPs and ISVs to effectively develop, deliver, and deploy MEC services on a given platform directly correlates with the availability and maturity of associated tools and test environment. Dronava is a hyper-connected, web-scale network reference design for the 5G mobile network, suitable for use as a test and development socket for cloud applications developed for MEC platforms with tools such as the Intel NEV SDK. With Dronava, developers can drive the application with real traffics from the network edge to the EPC core, and if need be, connect with services in the core network in order to fully characterize the functionalities, latency, and throughput of the platform and application.Teranium is an integrated development environment that simplifies the development, packaging, and deployment/management of cloud applications. Teranium can be utilized to develop and deploy MEC applications on a number of platforms. Together with Dronava, Teranium helps to reduce complexity and improve efficiency in the ability of CSPs and ISVs to adopt and deploy MEC-base services.

In this deck from the 2018 Swiss HPC Conference, Erez Cohen from Mellanox presents: Advanced Networking: The Critical Path for HPC, Cloud, Machine Learning and more. "While InfiniBand, RDMA and GPU-Direct are an HPC mainstay, these advanced networking technologies are increasingly becoming a core differentiator to the data center. In fact, within just a few short years so far, where only a handful of bleeding edge industrial leaders emulated classic HPC disciplines, today almost every commercial market is usurping HPC technologies and disciplines in mass. Additionally, with the rampant adoption of demanding workloads like Machine Learning, cloud to on premise providers are now deploying the same advanced networking technologies and delivering the same core capabilities and performance as traditional HPC environments. These same data centers embracing AI are also driving the increased adoption of complex technologies including containers and virtualization that must also be optimized for performance, optimal profit and operational efficiency. In this talk we explore how high performance networking has emerged from HPC to become the critical path for the cloud, machine learning and much more." Vendor lock-in can be a worry for many engineers . A new innovative approach, will for the first time, allow open-source serverless to run on AWS Lambda or Kubernetes using the same deployment artefact, packaged using the tools we love: containers. OpenFaaS is an open-source function as a service (FaaS) platform on the [CNCF serverless landscape](https://landscape.cncf.io/format=serverless). With OpenFaaS you can package anything as a serverless function and deploy to Kubernetes using containers. Due to UNIX-like primitives in the core architecture, it was possible to extend the system to run functions on both Kubernetes and AWS Lambda depending on user preference. The core components of OpenFaaS still run on Kubernetes but the functions are deployed and invoked on AWS Lambda
