Breaking the silos
WMA 2017 - Unite!
Creating Collaborative Opportunities with Art, Math, and Science
This multi-disciplinary panel will share how
their partnership challenged them to discover the
math in something significant to their
organizations – a craft, photograph, or an
action. This project pushed the panel to find
commonalities with atypical partners, unify under
a concept, and establish powerful connections
with like-minded individuals. Participants will
learn how to break traditional disciplinary silos
with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Art, Math) exploring the relationships between
math, science, and art.

Breaking Silos with STEAM

  • 1. Breaking the silos WMA 2017 - Unite! Creating Collaborative Opportunities with Art, Math, and Science
  • 2. This multi-disciplinary panel will share how their partnership challenged them to discover the math in something significant to their organizations – a craft, photograph, or an action. This project pushed the panel to find commonalities with atypical partners, unify under a concept, and establish powerful connections with like-minded individuals. Participants will learn how to break traditional disciplinary silos with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) exploring the relationships between math, science, and art.

  • 6. Who Are We? The Informal Mathematics Collaborative is a partnership between San Diego State University and Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, whom engaged art and science museums in Balboa park and community partners in San Diego County.

Provided opportunity to ask ourselves: ● What is math’s role in photography? ● How do we engage the public with those concepts? ● How are contemporary artists exploring these ideas? Lead to: ● Content development ● Staff development ● New opportunities

Art, science and math walk into an organization... ● Informal Mathematics Collaborative exposed BGC students to museum-based learning experiences, by blending art, science, and math. ● Fleet Workshop- Merging of Music and Math ● Mingei “Arts of the People”- Introduced our members to the importance and impact of cultural diversity ● Balboa Park Museums provided one of a kind experiences to our Members.
