Bat homes can be built to provide shelter for bats. Brown bats mate in the fall but delay fertilization until spring when females give birth to single babies that nurse for two weeks before learning to fly. Bats serve as pest control by eating insects like bees, ants, and mosquitoes. However, some bats prey on other bats or small birds. They live in caves that can house hundreds of bats and thousands of insects.
