• There are limited

• My education has
nothing to do with

organizations
• Non-profit jobs
don’t make up a big
part of our economy
• Pay is starting to become more
competitive
• A non-profit allows you to try on
many hats. This gives you skills
to use for advancing in your
organization or moving to
another organization
• Just about any degree can be
used in one non-profit or
another
• The non-profit sector
contributes more than auto
manufacturing and retail
industries do to the Gross
Domestic Product
Almost 1 million Ontarians are employed in
the sector.
Facts are from the Ontario Nonprofit Network and KAP Design.
Ontario has the largest volunteer
population in Canada with
5,000,000.

There are 46,000 non-profit and voluntary
organizations in Ontario.

The Canadian non-profit sector contributes more to the Gross
Domestic Product than other key industries- including agriculture,
mining, and motor vehicle manufacturing. (The GDP is the value of all goods
and services produced in Canada.)

non-profit organizations have
intentionally pursued training to

minded. A team player with a lot of
enthusiasm.”
“Someone who has good personal
relationship skills and knows how to
manage resources.”
“Someone who has interpersonal skills and
can clearly say why they want to be part of
the non-profit. They need to be flexible (it
may not be a 9-5 job), compassionate,
sensitive, organized, empathetic and they
need to have strong communication skills.”
“Someone who is literate, relates
well, cares and has strong ethics.”
“Someone who is ethical,
adaptable, a good
communicator, resilient and has
the willingness to be flexible
with their skills and their
schedule.”
“Someone who wants to have a positive
impact and make a difference. We need
people who want to work with people
and better the world.”
We will see many retirements in
senior management positions.
Fundraising will continue to be high
profile. People are starting to see
fundraising as a first career option,
and as government funding reduces,
the need for fundraising grows. As seen recently, it will be
interesting to see what role social
media plays in fundraising in the
future.
Social enterprise is starting to gain
traction. It requires community
minded and socially responsible
people who are able to be risk takers
and entrepreneurs.
What is a social enterprise?
• A business that is operated by a
non-profit organization
• The business is normally “outside"
of their normal mandate
• Any funds generated by the
business is put back into the
organization
• It helps to raise funds to further
support the mandate/vision of the
non-profit (ex. Botanical gardens
being a location for wedding
photography)
Experience
helps you
figure out
where you
might
want to be.
#1. Volunteer
.
Strategically pick
where you want to do
your 40 hours of
community service.
#1. Volunteer
.
What interests you?
Be part of those
organizations.
#1. Volunteer
.
Talk to people who work in the
sector. Take advantage of the
brilliant opportunities to pick the
brains of many people through
volunteer opportunities. Ask people
questions- don’t be intimidated.
#1. Volunteer
.
Volunteer at different types of non-
profits and in different roles. The sector
is so vast- there are so many different
sizes and types of non-profits.
#1. Volunteer
Learn about who you
are, what you enjoy
and what you’re good
at.
Take co-op placements with non-
profit organizations: you’re
helping yourself and the
Learn about
different
associations in our
region and any
training that they
may offer.
Understand the big
picture trends and
how non-profits fit
into that.
Work on your
communication
skills.
Research
opportunities.
I don’t know of
any other career
path that is as
gratifying.
A non-profit environment is different
than a for-profit environment. It is
important that you consider it as you
would consider any career goal or
opportunity. It is a viable option and the
opportunities are varied- so don’t limit
yourself.
What are your life goals?
Figure that out and then
make the connection to that
through a non-profit
organization.
Keep
your
options
open.
.
Rewarding is an
understatement- it is
a privilege to work to
support community
needs. The value is
indescribable.
.
If you are interested
in making a
difference then this
is the place to do
that.
.
Working for a
non-profit is a
great way to
try many
different hats,
and test your
skills and
abilities.
.
The pay is
becoming
more
competitive.
.
Think about your personal
gifts and interests and how
they might benefit another
person.
• It is a professional association
made up of people who raise
support for a wide variety of
non profit, charitable
organizations.
• They work to advance
philanthropy through
advocacy, research, education
and certification programs.
• They have been around for
over 50 years.
• AFP creates the standards for
professionalism in fundraising.
