2. How to Enable Slide to Shutdown in
Windows 8.1
When Windows 8 was unleashed to the public on 1st August 2012, one of the most frequent
issues faced and highlighted by the user base was ‘how to quickly shut down the PC’. Now, this
may seem a bit trivial but upon using the operating system one reaches the conclusion that
Microsoft had successfully made the process of shutting down somewhat inaccessible or
mysterious. The former case was such that you could easily click on the shut down option in the
Start menu whenever needed but with the Start Menu gone and the Start Screen introduced,
many of the initial users had to keep the power button pressed to achieve the desired outcome. In
actual, to shut down your computer in Windows 8, you have to move your cursor to the bottom
right corner of the screen to reveal the Charms Bar where clicking the Settings icon expands the
sidebar to reveal a Power button. Upon clicking this button, three options spring up: Shut
down, Restartand Sleep. Read More
To activate the Slide To Shutdown feature in Windows 8.1, follow the steps below:
Step 1
See if your system supports connected standby. The Slide To Shutdown feature, quite often,
requires connected standby (that allows instant turn on and off). In order to check support,
simply type powercfg/availablesleepstates in the Command Prompt window.
Step 2
Type ‘Slide To Shutdown’ in the Start Screen and click the item if it comes up in the search
results. Remember, the Slide to Shutdown item is an EXE file and it should be activated as soon
as you click it.
Step 3
3. It’s always best to assign a shortcut or a hotkey to such a critical function. To do that, navigate to
your Windows 8.1 installation drive where you must select the system folder by clicking
Windows folder followed by the System32 folder.
Upon reaching there, find
theSlideToShutdown.exe file and right click it to bring
the context menu to view. Inside the Send To option,
select the Desktop (create shortcut) option to make it
accessible on the desktop. Right click the respective
desktop icon and click on Properties to view the
subsequent window. Read More
