This talk was presented by Sriskandarajah Suhothayan (WSO2) and Roland Major (Transport for London) at the Strata Data Conference in London, May 23 2017. Transport for London (TfL) uses a wide range of data for operational purposes, but the underlying data is typically held in multiple disconnected systems. Freedom of Information requests have helped prove the value of sharing this data. TfL is embarking on a journey to make more of this data open and available in real time. TfL and WSO2 have been working together on broader integration projects. Roland Major and Sriskandarajah Suhothayan share the evolving big data and IoT architectures and services TfL is building to pull together these diverse datasets to better support operational teams and accelerate the identification and classification of disruption to improve response times for incidents. In particular, they explore WSO2’s solution, which emerged from the Data in Motion hackathon organized by TfL, AWS, and Geovation. The solution innovates TfL’s heterogeneous data sources through the combination of the TfL Unified API and its operational data sources, including traffic sensor, air quality, and passenger flow data, to provide better travel time and transit suggestions for Londoners and tourists using the WSO2 Data Analytics Server, WSO2 Complex Event Processor, and WSO2 API Manager, bringing together IoT and big data techniques to feed a real-time dashboard of current and predicted transport network status.

Public Sector Information management frameworks, usually in the form of ontologies and taxonomies containing controlled vocabularies and relevant metadata sets, appear as a key enabler that assists the classification and sharing of resources related to the provision of open data and efficient digital services towards citizen and enterprises. As different authorities typically use different terms to describe their resources and publish them in various data and service registries that may enhance the access to and delivery of governmental knowledge, but also need to communicate seamlessly at a national and pan-European level, the need for unifying and inclusive digital public service metadata standards emerges. This paper presents the creation of an ontology-based extended metadata set that embraces public sectors services, documents, XML Schemas, codelists, public bodies and information systems. Furthermore, the paper presents experiences of application within the Greek Public Sector, as part of the National Interoperability Framework specification. Such a metadata framework is an attempt to formalize the automated exchange of information between various portals and registries and further assist the service transformation and simplification efforts, while it can be further taken into consideration when applying Web 2.0 techniques in governance.

This session will challenges of the U.S. government’s migration from paper-based processes to complete SOA solution integrated across agencies and external partners – a transformation awarded the Best Organization SOA Application by the Federal CIO Council’s Service-Oriented Architectures Community of Practice. Critical to success was the use of open source and open standard technologies. Included in this is rule-based document handling as well as extended rule directed business processes. Converting backend manual review processes to an automated workflow dashboard with knowledge driven document intelligence to assist the staff and researchers. This system is now successfully deployed with ability to handle thousands of application submissions a week, resulting in up to 10 gigabytes of data flows weekly. The lessons learned in managing open source and open technology as well as aligning and leveraging both batch and real-time online tools with desktop applications will be highlighted. Knowing how to exploit the power of XML integration technologies is also crucial. Culture shift for the in-house staff also has to be managed – and the experience of providing help desk support to external partners.

Polling-based APIs or the RESTful APIs were the main building blocks of traditional integration stories. But with the need to respond to events in real-time, integration architecture has shifted from being polling-based to event-driven. With the emergence of reactive event-driven architecture, the asynchronous APIs were able to hold their distinct position in modern-day integrations.
