It’s one thing to support many data sources with megabytes of data. It’s a completely different problem supporting thousands of data sources with terabytes of data every day. How do you create systems that scale infinitely? The answer is; you don’t . You can not design for infinite scalability. Rather, consider a pod approach where each pod supports a defined capacity. Scalability results from deployment of multiple cooperating pods. Systems handling extremely large data sources with significant processing requirements are difficult at best to validate. Attempting to deploy such a system without well understood capacity limits is destined for failure. This was first presented at Cloud Expo NYC.

It's a dream as old as business computing: the ability to create a graphical model and then to deploy it as a working information system. Many attempts to realize this dream have come and gone with varying degrees of success, from visual programming languages like Visual Basic and Scratch, to business workflow systems like BPMN and its proprietary commercial variants, to engineering-focused systems like UML. But let's face it: most low-code and model-based application development tools fall far short of the needs of modern software development teams. At best, they're useful for rapidly testing ideas and creating prototypes. At worst, they're used by "citizen coders" to cynically circumvent good engineering practices, with IT operations left holding the bag of operating, securing, and scaling black-box applications that cut against modern DevSecOps practices. Event-driven application architecture, enabled by infrastructure like Kafka and its ecosystem, has the potential to dramatically advance toward the age-old, model-driven and low-code dream. But what would an event-centric and developer-friendly low-code look like? This talk will outline strategies for low-code and model-driven development based on Event Modeling. We'll explore how event-driven application architecture provides a simple yet robust framework for generating DevSecOps-friendly code for the UI, for the web services layer, and for event-processing.

Network devices play a crucial role; they are not just in the Data Center. It's the Wifi, VOIP, WAN and recently underlays and overlays. Network teams are essential for operations. It's about time we highlight to the configuration management community the importance of Network teams and include them in our discussions. This talk describes the personal experience of systems engineer on how to kickstart a network team into automation. Most importantly, how and where to start, challenges faced, and progress made. The network team in question uses multi-vendor network devices in a large traditional enterprise. NetDevOps, we do not hear that term as frequent as we should. Every time we hear about automation, or configuration management, it is usually the application, if not, it is the systems that host the applications. How about the network systems and devices that interconnect and protects our services? This talk aims to describe the journey a systems engineer had as part of an automation assignment with the network management team. Building from lessons learned and challenges faced with system automation, how one can kickstart an automation project and gain small wins quickly. Where and how to start the journey? What to avoid? What to prioritise? How to overcome the lack of network skills for the automation engineer and lack of automation and Linux/Unix skills for network engineers. What challenges were faced and how to overcome them? What fights to give up? Where do I see network automation and configuration management as a systems engineer? What are the status quo and future expectations?
