Cache/Battery Notes
• Cache memory is shared between system memory and
cache memory
• All data cache is mirrored for controller failover

battery is removed or failed

StorageTek Data Snapshot

Snapshot Reserve Volume
• Holds data overwritten in base, or data written to snapshot
volume
> Data preserved from base termed COW (copy-on-first-
write) data.
• Can reside in different virtual disk from base volume
• User defined capacity – defaults to 20% of base
• Expandable via DVE
• One reserve per snapshot (no shared copy-on-write data)


Data Snapshot Limits
• Upto 4 snapshots of a given volume
• Max 512 snapshots per StorageTek 6140 array
• Base volume, reserve volume and snapshot are all
owned by the same controller


StorageTek Data Volume Copy
• Allows creation of a complete byte-for-byte copy of a
volume within the storage array
> Copied volume termed “source” volume
> Copy of volume termed “target” or “clone” volume
• “Copy Request” Object
> Associates source and target volumes (copy pair)
> May be created, started, stopped and deleted


Volume Copy – Source Volume
• May be a standard volume, snapshot or replication primary
volume
• Source volume is read-only during copy process
> While volume copy has status of In Progress, Pending or
Failed
> Maintains PiT integrity
> Volcopy a snapshot to maintain normal I/O to source
volume during copy
• If you need to continue to write to the source
volume, create a snapshot, then create volume
copy of the snapshot

StorageTek Volume Copy –
Target Volume
• Selection
> May be a standard volume, base volume of a disabled or
failed snapshot, replication primary
> May reside in a different vdisk to the source volume
> Must be at least the same capacity as the source volume
• Identical to the source volume after the copy
completes
• As long as copy relationship is maintained
> Target copy can be set to read-only
> “Re-copy” command uses same source/target

Replication Rules
● Mirroring relationship is on a volume basis
● At most one replication relationship per volume
● Primary and secondary volumes must be standard
volumes
● An array may have up to 32 replication relationships

(primary or secondary)
● A minimum of 2 arrays are required

● Both primary and secondary volumes must be

owned by the same controller in each storage array
● Secondary volumes are read-only
