2. What is waste segregation? Separation of our home waste into: 1. Wet waste – from kitchen, garden 2. Dry waste. - Paper + cardboard - Plastic + metal - e-waste + glass
3. What happens to mixed waste? Rag pickers go through waste to pick out recyclable waste, sell it to scrap dealers. Mixed waste in home Dumped near low level park Carried in trucks Goes to dump on outskirts
4. What happens to segregated waste? Scarce non-renewable raw material is saved – trees for paper, petroleum for plastic, ore for metals. Waste collectors keep the money, their families improve. Segregated waste in home Collected in large bags Sold to scrap dealer Goes to recycling factory
5. Why should we segregate? To prevent this 1. Waste dumps around the city breeding Cholera, typhoid... 2. Wet waste and toxins from e-waste getting into our ground water. 3. Plastic being burned, polluting our air. To enable this 1. Improve our environment 2. Recycle dry waste and reduce use of scarce raw material 3. Improve the lives of waste collectors.
6. The present collection system You collect mixed waste in a dustbin, give it to waste collectors every morning.
7. The new collection system Wet waste – collect in dustbin, give to waste collectors daily, as you are doing now 1. Kitchen + garden waste 2. Bio-medical waste (cotton, sanitary pads, condoms, syringes) wrapped in newspaper. Dry waste – collect in 3 different bags, give every Saturday 1. Bag 1- Plastic + metal 2. Bag 2 - Paper + cardboard 3. Bag 3 – e-waste + glass
8. What's in it for me? A nice warm feeling that: 1. You have improved the health & earnings of waste collectors. 2. You are improving the environment, cleaning your neighbourhood. Waste landfill in Mavallipura on the outskirts of Bangalore. 3000 tons (3 Lakh kg) of garbage are added every day. If the whole of Bangalore adopts segregation, this can be reduced by 90 %, or (optimistically) even by 100 %. You are a part of this great movement.
9. So who started this? Sada Zero = Sadashivanagar Zero Waste Initiative. Sada Zero is a community initiative, belongs to the residents of Sadashivanagar.
10. How can I be part of this movement ? This is our movement, by the community, for the community. You can either Lead the program. Help in implementing the program and spreading the message. OR Join the program. Ensure proper segregation in your home.
