Unity is a cornerstone of the message of TAUHEED.

As a community (As a community (UmmahUmmah),), TAUTAUHHEEDEED binds our hearts to forge abinds our hearts to forge a
single brotherhood of people which may be from diverse andsingle brotherhood of people which may be from diverse and
different background, sweeping away ancient bias and pastdifferent background, sweeping away ancient bias and past
prejudice, enmity, hatred and discriminations, that has plaguedprejudice, enmity, hatred and discriminations, that has plagued
human co-existence.human co-existence.
One of the amazing achievement and legacy of our ProphetOne of the amazing achievement and legacy of our Prophet
MuhammadMuhammad ‫ﷺ‬ was the establishment ofwas the establishment of UKHUWWAHUKHUWWAH amongstamongst
the diverse people into on global and cosmopolitan community.the diverse people into on global and cosmopolitan community.

Yet today, the irony of this is, the glaring disunity and enmityYet today, the irony of this is, the glaring disunity and enmity
amongst Muslims is so apparent. Why?amongst Muslims is so apparent. Why?
This is symptomatic of the inherent flaws, ‘This is symptomatic of the inherent flaws, ‘diseasesdiseases’ and’ and
‘‘deviationsdeviations’ which perhaps have indeed, afflicted us Muslims. How’ which perhaps have indeed, afflicted us Muslims. How
have we developed? What kind of education and influence have wehave we developed? What kind of education and influence have we
allowed ourselves to be influenced by? What are the importantallowed ourselves to be influenced by? What are the important
teaching we have neglected? What factor motivates and bind us?teaching we have neglected? What factor motivates and bind us?
Why do we promote unity upon other platforms, the whileWhy do we promote unity upon other platforms, the while
neglecting to be concern towards promoting the unity of Muslims?neglecting to be concern towards promoting the unity of Muslims?

Or worst than this, when we are not promoting unity of Muslims,Or worst than this, when we are not promoting unity of Muslims,
some are even guilty of promoting disunity and hatred amongstsome are even guilty of promoting disunity and hatred amongst
ourselves.ourselves. LAA-HAW-LA WA-LAA QUW-WATA IL-LA BIL-LAAH!LAA-HAW-LA WA-LAA QUW-WATA IL-LA BIL-LAAH!
What kind of “What kind of “MuslimsMuslims” are these?” are these?
Merely being aMerely being a MuslimMuslim is not sufficient without striving tois not sufficient without striving to
becomebecome Mu’meenMu’meen (Believer). And a(Believer). And a Mu’meenMu’meen must manifest hismust manifest his
belief in his entire being or disposition (belief in his entire being or disposition (AkhlaqAkhlaq) and practice) and practice
((‘Amal‘Amal).).

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do
not become divided. And remember the favour of Allah
upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your
hearts together and you became, by His favour, brothers.
And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He
saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His
verses that you may be guided.,”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 103)

WA’-TA-SWEE-MU – BU - HAB – LIL-LAA-HI – JA-MEE- ’AN
WA-LAA – TA – FAR – RO - KUU
WADZ-KU-RUU – NI’ – MA-TALLAA-HI – ‘ALAI-KUM
IDZ-KUN-TUM – A’ – DAA -AN – FA-AL-LA-FA –
BAI-NA- QU-LUU-BI-KUM
And hold fast, all together, unto the bond with
Allah, and do not draw apart from one another
And remember the blessings which Allah has
bestowed upon you
how, when you were enemies, He brought your hearts together

In our social relationship, some of us find it amusing to ridicule,
mock, jeer, scoff at, laugh, make fun or taunt at others. It is
especially so, when we are in a kind of cliques or grouping.
Why do we do this? It is due to our self-conceit and arrogance.
Never for a moment do we consider that such behaviour is wrong. In
such association or gathering, each one tries to deflect attention of
their own defects by projecting the weakness of others, especially of
those people we consider to be outside our circle, outside our group.

We feel secure with our buddies, joking and laughing like the old
witches of "Macbeth" who fail to see their own evil and ugliness.
Some of us even considers it a norm to do this, and any attempt
at changing this behaviour amongst our peers is met with
accusations of having "no sense of humour", "too serious", "no fun
to be with" etc. But the "joke" is actually on us if we indulge in such
practice, as Allah s.w.t. says: "it may well be that the one derided is
better" than ourselves.

Deriding others has many forms. Verbal derision, sarcasm, by
gesturing, mimicking or even giving nicknames - which aims at
ridiculing the person. If we are to analyze what motivates our
actions, it is that unashamed pride and conceit we think of
ourselves.
And because we are used to directing these derision towards
others, we do not feel how it can possibly hurt. But - What if others
were to do it to us?

Although in this verse, by using the male gender it generally is
quite sufficient and usually applies to both, male and female, yet
Allah repeated the command by specifically addressing the women,
lest some people may try to excuse themselves from this command
just because they are not men. This, indeed, demonstrates the
seriousness of the command, that it is to be observed by every
Muslim, as it removes any ambiguity, lest some may try to seek
excuse by legalistic arguments. There is no doubt that this
commandment applies to every Muslim - both male & female.
SERIOUSNESS OF THIS COMMAND

Also, one aspect of the teaching of Islam is that it emphasises
respect towards the honour and dignity of others - everyone -
Muslim as well as non-Muslim. All mankind are the children of
Adam a.s. and deserves the appropriate respect because Allah
s.w.t. says:
RESPECT DIGNITY & HONOUR OF PEOPLE

Also, one aspect of the teaching of Islam is that it emphasises

s.w.t. says:

Adam, and borne them over land and sea, and provided for themAdam, and borne them over land and sea, and provided for them
sustenance out of the good things of life, and favoured them far abovesustenance out of the good things of life, and favoured them far above
most of Our creation:”most of Our creation:”

So every mankind must be respected.
Some perhaps may have tarnished this God-given honour upon
themselves but, we are not to seek out nor assume this, but we
are to give everyone the benefit of doubt, and unless there are
clear evidence to the contrary, we are still to respect them.

As towards those whom Allah s.w.t. has chosen, especially the
Believers, by virtue of them being a believer, Allah s.w.t. in fact
has conferred special honour upon him/her. Their honour are
given with the support and assurance by Allah s.w.t. Himself, thus
we are duly warned in this verse:

another behind your backs (another behind your backs (GHIBBAHGHIBBAH). Would any of you like to). Would any of you like to
eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, you would loathe it! Andeat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, you would loathe it! And
be conscious of Allah. Verily, Allah is an accep-tor of repentance,be conscious of Allah. Verily, Allah is an accep-tor of repentance,
a dispenser of grace!”a dispenser of grace!”

enjoy moderation, make me into one of the people of
right behaviour, the proofs of right conduct, and the
servants of righteousness,"
