MEANING OF EDUCATION
 The term education usually denotes the technical
sense and is generally limited to the context of
teachers instructing students.
GEORGE F.KNELLER
 “In its broad sense, education refers to any act or experience
that has a formative effect on the mind, character, or physical
ability of an individual.
 In its technical sense education is the process by which
society, through schools, colleges, universities, and other
institutions, deliberately transmits its cultural heritage–its
accumulated knowledge, values, and skills–from one
generation to another.”
Pestalozzi
 “Education is natural, harmonious and progressive development of man’s
innate powers.”
 Education inculcates certain values and principles and also prepares a
human being for social life.
THE NEED AND IMPORTANCE OF AIM
 Aim gives direction to the activity.
 Education bridges the gulf between the original nature and the demand
of the society.
 Educator is like a sailor if the aim is not clear to him he might make a
child a rudderless vessel.
 Dewey says, “acting with an aim is all one with acting intelligently.”
 Aims enables a teacher to decide upon the right method of teaching and
to choose devices
CRITERIA OF GOOD AIM
 ACCORDING TO John Dewey
 The Goals are related to real life situation
 Good aims are flexible
 Good aims involves various types of activities
THE KNOWLEDGE AIM
 Socrates said, knowledge is power by which things are done
 The acquisition of knowledge is essential for an educated person.
 Knowledge of worldly things like nature and her laws, men and their
institutions gives knowledge of inner self and world
 Knowledge brings power
 Knowledge helps in attainment of morality
 Rationality distinguishes men from other animals
INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT
 Education should enable a human being to attain the greatest possible
harmony, internal and external, spiritual and material, for the fullest
possible development of human potentialities and capacities.
 Development of an individual – physically, mentally and spritually is well
known aim of education.
 Aim of education should be to make children self- confident and self
dependent, and to make them strong physically and mentally.
MORAL AND CHARACTER
FORMATION AIM
 Education system and teacher should try to achieve this as aim as good as
possible
 Aristotle found two tendencies in men
1. Passionate and Brutal
2. Intellectual and human
The task of the teacher is to develop the tendency towards right conduct.
The idealist and educationist support this aim
The development of character means growth of worthy sentiments, admiration
courage etc.
Character training means the training of will. The will must strengthened and
properly directed
VOCATIONAL AIM OF EDUCATION
 Education should enable a person to earn his livelihood
 This aim is also called “ the bread and butter” aim of education.
 School should educate students about how to earn and meet the values of
society
 In order to cater the needs of future a child must get vocational education and
guidance
EDUCATION FOR CITIZENSHIP
 Aristotle and Plato, “The social aim which means that education should produce
effective individuals in the sense that they realize their responsibilities towards the
society.”
 Social aim of education in equally important because an individual lives in society and
has his obligations towards his nation.
 There is a realisation that, the present education divorced from the real social content
and social goals.
 The child must have education about his government and own rights and duties
 The child should get education to obedience to law and convention.
 Regards for other man’s point of view
 Socialization of the mind
 A child must get education about how to Solve the human problems
