2. //// THE AESTHETICS OF COMFORT
During the 1970s, Roche Bobois - with the creative complicity of designer Hans Hopfer –
invented a new type of seating, embodied in 1971 by the famous Lounge sofa, known today as
the Mah Jong.
Since then, with the collaboration of both well-known and emerging young designers, the
company has continued to imagine new aesthetic and conceptual approaches to ways of
sitting, with a focus on the sofa, the central product within Roche Bobois’ collections.
Presented exclusively in Milan, two new sofas – one of which is accompanied by an armchair –
explore this area of creation. They are shown alongside the Calisson bed and the winner of the
ROCHE BOBOIS DESIGN COMPETITION : the AVA chair from young Chinese designer, Song
Wen Zhong.

disequilibrium is balanced by equilibrium ». Barilone has created a number of important

5. /// 1st Prize: The AVA Chair // Design Song Wen Zhong
Anticipating new attitudes and emerging trends is part of the Roche Bobois culture of
creation and this extends to looking for future masters of design.
In this spirit, Roche Bobois started a design competition in 2009. Every two years, in a
different country, the competition invites young talent to respond to a specific theme.
Song Wen Zhong, deisgner of the AVA chair is the first to win the competition which
took place in China.
The second competition has already been launched in Morocco, with the promise of a
new design to be included in Roche Bobois’ Spring/Summer 2012 collection.
Description
The AVA chair is a project to result from
the first Roche Bobois ‘Design Awards’, a
competition launched in China in 2009 and
held in a different country every two years.
Under the theme of ‘Nature, the universal
link between east and west’, 28 year-old
design independent Song Wen Zhong, a
graduate of Beijing Academy of Arts,
sought inspiration for his Ava chair in the
myths and stories of Chinese legend. With
its long sensuous tapering limbs, Ava
resembles a dragon-like avatar
transformed into a chair: a fine yet strong
specimen such as a giant ant.
Representing the first plastic injection-
created design from Roche Bobois, Ava
marries high-tech purity with organic form.

//// ROCHE BOBOIS VALUES / KEY FIGURES
Roche Bobois values
An international leader in top end furniture, French ‘editor’ and distributor Roche Bobois is
celebrating over 50 years of undisputed success in the business.
Under the current directorship of Gilles Bonan (promoted to chief executive officer in 2008), the
brand has enjoyed an ambassadorial role, representing the best of French interior design and
furniture all around the world. This achievement is due in no small part to the combination of
values that distinguish it: creativity, quality and a respect for the environment.
Creativity : Interpreter of emerging lifestyle trends and a master at revisiting the
classics, the name Roche Bobois has, for the last 50 years, been synonymous with French
design. A creative vitality expressed in two new collections launched each year, in a rhythm
similar to that of the fashion industry.
8. To create these collections, Roche Bobois has always been involved the most talented
designers of the time; names such as Pierre Paulin, Olivier Mourgue, Marc Berthier and Hans
Hopfer have today given way to those of Christophe Delcourt, Sacha Lakic and Cédric Ragot.
A tradition of aesthetic and technical innovation is accompanied by a vision of ‘Home Couture’
embodied in the regular collaborations with grand fashion houses such as Missoni Home,
Kenzo Maison, Jean Paul Gaultier and Sonia Rykiel Maison.
Quality : Meticulously researched design, highest quality materials and exceptional
craftsmanship have been the hallmarks of the Roche Bobois brand since its creation 50 years
ago. A quest for perfection achieved as a result of close collaboration with the European
factories and workshops where respect for the traditional skills and methods of cabinet-making,
woodworking, leather working and upholstering is fully maintained.
The small scale methods of manufacture place traditional hand-finishing processes at the centre
of the operation and allow for a very high level of ‘bespoke’ personalisation of each individual
Roche Bobois piece.
An anchoring of tradition coupled with continuous research and development into new high-tech
methods of manufacture (such as those used to fabricate the Ava chair, made from a steel
mould into which is injected either a polycarbonate - for the transparent version - or a nylon - for
the opaque version – under 1500 tons of pressure) are essential to the Roche Bobois way of
doing things.
Respect for the environment : Monitoring and minimising the impact of its products on
the environment is a duty that Roche Bobois takes seriously, and to which it has responded via
the setting up of voluntary policies.
The company takes its social responsibility as seriously as its environmental one, setting up
initiatives with its suppliers to ensure the duty of responsibility is extended as far as possible.
Consequently, a number of ‘eco-conceived’ collections have been created since 2006 : Legend
and Saga by Christophe Delcourt, Assemblage by Stéphane Lebrun, Horizon by Luigi Gorgoni,
Fossile from Mostapha EL Oulhani, Jérôme Garzon and Fred Sionis, Brio from Sacha Lakic,
Oxymore from Daniel Ezan… so many products that testify to a genuine engagement with
environmental responsibility.
