The document summarizes Vodacom's Ikhwezi mHealth Partnership, which aims to use mobile technology to address HIV/AIDS in South Africa in four ways: 1) educate the public about prevention, 2) encourage testing and treatment initiation, 3) help those on treatment adhere to their drugs, and 4) strengthen the healthcare system. The partnership involves Vodacom Foundation, technology partners like Praekelt Foundation, and clinical partners like Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute. 8. The Objectives The Vodacom Ikhwezi mHealth Partnership aims to support the work of the Department of Health (DOH) and SA National AIDS Council (SANAC) in four ways, through the use of mobile technology to: Communicate to and educate the general population around HIV/AIDS - with a strong prevention focus. 2) Encourage widespread HIV Counseling and Testing, and support people living with HIV to initiate treatment where appropriate. 3) Assist people living with HIV who are on ARV treatment, to stay on treatment and ultimately, adhere to their drugs. 4) Strengthen the Health Care System.
9. Objective 1 Use mobile technology to... Communicate to and educate the general population around HIV/Aids - with a strong prevention focus. To target the general population (irrespective of their HIV-status) with informational services that drive awareness, prevention, testing and access to treatment. Our activities are in-line with the SANAC communications strategy and the National HCT campaign.
10. Objective 2 Use mobile technology to... Encourage widespread HIV Counseling and Testing, and support people living with HIV to initiate treatment where appropriate. Support the process of HIV Counseling and Testing so that more people know their status. Once people know they are HIV positive, then use mobile technology to drive towards a CD4-test, and once tested, inform people of their results, so that they can either be enrolled onto treatment or be reminded to go for follow-up CD4 tests in future.
11. Objective 3 Use mobile technology to... Assist HIV positive people whom are on ARV treatment, to stay on treatment and ultimately, adhere to their drugs. Use mobile technology to keep people on treatment for as long as possible, by reminding them to take their drugs, and to go to the doctor.
12. Objective 4 Use mobile technology to... Strengthen the Health Care System Leverage the coverage footprint of Vodacom South Africa and the value offering of mobile (GSM) technology to strengthen the South African health care system. Several embedded service offerings enable better clinical and administrative decision making in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
