2. “The business transforming CIO role:
what is required of a today’s CIO”
Does the CIO role have a future?
If so, what does it look like?
What is expected from the role?
and...What do we, CIO’s, need to focus on?

3. “The business transforming CIO role:
what is required of a today’s CIO”
There are almost as many opinions as there are commentators
"The CIO role is at a critical point - it is potentially under
threat," Forrester analyst John Brand told a closed-door
gathering of CIOs in Sydney last week. "The key is not try to
build the strongest wall around IT but to focus on
responding to changes as quickly as you can, that's the role
of the CIO in the future.
The role of CIO in many organizations has expanded
in scope beyond being the IT authority to being the
driving force behind business innovation.

The role of the CIO has changed over the years and
today that role is heading toward leadership and a
focus on operations, rather than just on
technology, according to Forbes.com
The CIO is a Triathlete
Three sequential events, each tougher than the
last, Event 1: Cost reduction, Event 2: Service
enhancement, Event 3: Value creation

4. “The business transforming CIO role:
what is required of a today’s CIO”
Contrary to some views I believe the CIO role is strengthening,
But......the role is changing/has changed,
the expectation of what CIO’s should contribute,
the skills, capabilities required,
the approach CIO’s adopt towards business issues.

5. “The business transforming CIO role:
what is required of a today’s CIO”
It’s my opinion:
“though it’s where it all starts, the CIO role is about more
than just running IT”.
“equipped with the right capabilities and track record the
opportunities are there to take on business transformation
programmes and step in to wider business roles”.
But the question is how? and what is required?
I want to look at 3 dimensions of today’s CIO role
“Deliver the IT” “Think Business In” “Create Business Transformation”

6. DELIVER the IT

9. “The business transforming CIO role:
what is required of a today’s CIO”
In Summary,
The role of the CIO is changing/has changed,
Today’s CIO:
Delivers the IT – operational excellence to innovation
Takes a “business in” view - commerciality
Has business breadth and balance – creates business transformation
