CIP Planned Activities (South Asia)
1. Developing farmer based potato system in non-
traditional seed producing areas to benefit farmers of
Plateau Region (South) of India”
Mohinder Singh Kadian
CIP-SWCA
3. Background:
• In the proposed pro-poor project, 95% of the beneficiaries will
be marginal and small farmers with significant percent of
women associated with agriculture in Karnataka and
Maharashtra with land holdings less than 1 ha
• At present nearly 45,000 ha area is under potato and
productivity is less than 14 t/ha
• The production of quality seed locally can bring about 75,000
ha under potato and increase potato productivity by 20% by
2020.
4. Project Goal:
The pro-poor project seeks to benefit marginal and small of
plateau region sustainable production of quality seed locally.
Specific objectives:
• Baseline survey undertaken to study exiting seed system,
marketing chain and participation of woman farmers at
farms and at home
• Low aphid population and bacterial free
sites for quality potato seed production
identified through survey.
5. • Degeneration study undertaken for policy makers to
implement at state level
• The income of poor farmers increased more than
40% by reduced cost of seed and increased
productivity
• Potato introduced in non-traditional potato growing
areas
• Capacity building of extension workers, researchers
and farmers on improved technologies for seed
production
6. Project Outputs
• Existing potato seed system and marketing chain documented
• Areas with low aphid population (below thresh-hold level)
and bacterial free identified by 2016
• Sustainability of health standard of seed
under different environments studied
and documented.
• 30-40% seed requirement of about 10,000 farming families
met locally produced quality seed by 2017 and non-traditional
areas brought under potato cultivation.
