- Good Morning. I would like begin by thanking Danny for the invitation to come and speak with you this morning and also a thank you to you all for taking time out of your busy schedules. Introductions! My Name is Carl and this is Garth. Together we are responsible for the running of the business on a day to day basis. While Garth Manages the operational, technical and estimating sides of the business I look after the back office administration , staff development/training and the development of the business.
- Ok So WHO ARE WE? Allied Pipefreezing services was founded in 1994 and is a family run business providing on site specialist pipeline services such as Pipefreezing, under pressure drilling and line stopping / bypassing services Our services cover a wide range of industries and sectors from building services, local authorities, pharmaceuticals, oil & gas, petrochemicals, the NHS and of course the utilities sector. WHY ARE WE HERE? The aim of the presentation is to introduce our services to those of you who have not come across us and to help those that have build on the knowledge they have about our services and how they can help you save time and costs. WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE THIS MORNING? Ultimately we want you to go away with a wider knowledge of our services. This will then help you to identify areas where we can help you cut labour time, associated costs and service downtime on your projects by using our services.
- OK so as you are most probably aware these are the mainstream services we offer. Pipefreezing, Under pressure Drilling Linestopping and bypassing. We also provide a one stop shop service we where can additionally provide associated works such as valve replacement, pipe re routing, valve insertion as part of maintenance tasks, change of services or whether it is project enabling works. We can do it all!
- Put simply, pipefreezing is a non-intrusive, controlled method of isolating a short section of pipe, by solidifying the pipe contents to form a secure ice plug which in turn contains the liquid flow whilst a modification procedure is carried out. The major advantage is that a 'break-in' can be performed without incurring the costs and down-time of a complete system drain down. During the process a jacket is fitted around the pipeline - on either one or both sides of the work section - and liquid nitrogen is introduced into the jacket to freeze the contents of the pipe. Liquid Nitrogen has a temperature of - 196°C, and is consumed during the course of operations by continuous evaporation, which takes place within the jacket in three ways: Heat is absorbed from the pipe and its' contents, as it cools from ambient temperature to liquid nitrogen temperature. By absorption of heat from within the jacket, and in natural evaporation through exposure to natural air. In maintaining the plug in its frozen form, while replacement, maintenance or repair work takes place. Once the ice plug is established, the 'dead-side' can be drained, thus allowing intrusive pipework repairs or alternations to be carried out. Once work is completed and the system back-filled, the integrity of the repaired section can be pressure tested to the ice plug. The freeze process time varies, depending on the size of pipe and its contents. Hydrocarbon oils and other chemicals can take up to four times as long to freeze as water. Benefits Safe, cost effective and reliable service Negates the need for drainage, venting or refilling thus maximising up-time Pipefreezing can be applied to pipes containing a wide range of liquids Environmentally friendly solution. Safety and reliability Freezes can be carried out on high pressure systems Structure and integrity of pipes are unaffected by the freezing process Safe working environment is ensured by continually monitoring oxygen levels Eliminates the handling of hazardous liquids Reduces storage and disposal of contaminated toxic fluids
- Pipefreezing isn't always the best solution, and in these cases, APS is able to offer clients an Under Pressure Drilling, or 'Hot Tapping' service. Under pressure drilling is employed as a means of providing a branch connection to a live pipe in constant operation, where the consequences of a shutdown would not be practicable. This method uses a short section of pipe, to which an isolating valve is either welded or fitted mechanically. After fitting - and with the valve in the open position - the pipe is drilled to the maximum permissible size through the valve. On completion of the drilling operation the valve is closed, and the drilling equipment removed. A comprehensive range of optional fittings is available, including corporation cocks, ferrules, sample points and various type of valves. Benefits Minimal down time Reduces disruption on mains water. Safety and reliability No leakage or loss of fluid Can be used on almost any type of pipe (iron, Steel, Plastic, concrete) Can be carried out whilst the system is in operation
- LineStopping is a mechanical method of forming a temporary isolation in a live main, where some flow exists and thus cannot be frozen, or a total shutdown is not an option. LineStopping has the added advantage that a bypass can be installed so as to maintain flow, thus negating the need for a shut down or major disruption to services. LineStopping can be used on most common pipeline materials such as Steel, Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, Copper, Stainless steels, Plastics and Cement Asbestos. One or more bespoke fittings are either welded or bolted on to the pipeline, to which valves are fitted. The pipe is Under Pressure drilled as required, and then the LineStopping equipment is installed. If a bypass is required it will be set up during the installation of the LineStop and proved prior to the flow in the main being stopped. On completion of the work the equipment is removed and the bespoke fittings are plugged, and a secondary cap fitted for increased integrity. The Benefits of LineStopping and Bypassing No interruption to customers and industry No drain down time and associated waste/storage problems No customer warnings or lengthy shutdown planning System maintains pressure and flow Can be applied to all types of pipe contents – gasses and liquids Minimal need for works to be carried out during unsociable hours.
- Here we had a client who had a number of large dead legs on a CHW system. As it was a public building there was concerns over the risks posed to infection from legionaires. We were able to offer a solution using pipefreezing to isolate the mains so that the dead legs could be cut right back and capped off. The works undertaken took us just under a day to complete. The alternative solution of shutting down the system and draining down would of taken considerably longer and the costs incurred would have been considerably higher.
- So here we had a site that was undergoing extensive modifications with new dosing buildings and metering stations being constructed. As part of the plan there was a requirement to insert statiflow mixers into 2 450mm main pipelines. We were approached by the main contractor to see if we could offer a solution. At that time the only option was to drain down and remove the water by way of tanker and IBCs. This was not an option as this would have caused major disruption to the local area. We were able to offer linestopping as the suitable solution. The process was quick and enabled the pipeline to be isolated for a minimal number of hours. A double linestop operation was undertaken. Once the linestops were in place and proved then we were able to progress with the cutting of the pipe. A Clamshell cold cutter was used to get an even cut at either end of the pipe. Once the cutting was complete the section was removed. We were now able to fit the statiflow mixer with flange adapters between the mixer and the existing pipeline. The whole operation from start to finish was completed in a just a few hours.
- This was a relatively simple solution for us. The venue current chillers were insufficient to provide the volume of chilled water required to create the ice rink. We were able to provide a live branch connection on the existing flow and return pipes so that additional mobile chillers could be attached to the system. In this case the branches were welded onto the mains and standard gate valves attached. As well as welded, branch connections can be provided with clamp on tees. Again this service was carried out with in a day.
