3. CAMERA ANGLES
The video starts with mid shots of the woman in the bath establishing the
scene.
The scene cuts away to the man holding his head which is followed by a
cut-in shot with an extreme close up of the wedding ring on his finger.
This helps to suggest the some of background narrative of the story
that the man is married.
The video contains Over the Shoulder shots when the woman is throwing
the glass bottle which adds to the drama of the scene as it nearly hits
the man.
At the beginning there is an extreme close up of the tap running in reverse
which shows the obscurity of the scene.
The video shows a wide shot of the two struggling across the table which
frequently cuts away to extreme close up shots of their body or objects
falling off the table, accentuating the struggle between the pair.
The woman appears to be the protagonist in this video as dominates most
of the shots and the majority are seen from her perspective.
4. EDITING
In Breezeblocks the pace of the editing matches the speed of the music.
For example in the bridge of the song at 2:30, the pace of cuts quickens
whereas at the start there is a extremely slow zoom in on the man when
the music is slow.
There is use of special effects with the reverse effect used throughout the
whole of the video therefore changing the order of shots and motivates
the video to reveal the man pulling away the breezeblock.
There are a lot of Match on Action shots, for example the shot of the two of
them on the table, to see the continuation of action from one shot to
another which makes a smoother transition between shots in the video
adding to the momentum of the scene.
The final shot ends on a fade to black which adds emphasis to the
conclusion of the narrative.
5. MISE EN SCENE
The whole video has low key lighting. This reflects the sinister side of the
narrative and the minor/sad chords in the song.
The video shows the struggle between a man and woman, both wearing
casual clothes showing that they’re possibly working class.
The video takes place in a small flat and confined space of the man’s home
allows for shots of belongings around the house to be used in effective
shots for the reverse effect such at the use of the breezeblock,
smashing bottle and falling plastic containers.
6. NARRATIVE VS. PERFORMANCE
In this video there contains no hints of performance from the artist. The
video is purely based on narrative.
The narrative doesn’t necessarily completely link to the song however is
based on the struggle in a relationship.
