GCEP/TRMA 585: Developing A
Professional Online Identity Spring 2013
online identities, personal branding, social
media
LinkedIn
•LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site
which allows networking with other’s in your field or your
fields of interest.
• It is one step in the process in the establishment and
developing a personal brand.
•Provides a platform to showcase professional experience
and connect with potential employers.
•It’s easy to set up and start connecting.
Connect with me at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/darlenefhill
Online Privacy
• What is the risk vs. benefit of an online presence?
• Is security “secure” on the online?
• There are a lot of scary stories floating around the
internet. Make informed decisions.
• Ultimately, nothing on the internet is private.
Diligence regarding the information
you make available (text, images,
personal) is necessary.
I had a friend who bought a domain name associated with
a horrendous news story. “He promptly received a pizza
delivered to his front door as well as an email from the
hacktivist group, Anonymous.  It's really not that difficult to
find information, even if your not ‘out there’”.
- D.Hill
Twitter #GCEP585
You can follow me at: http://twitter.com/EduAnalyst
• Twitter is an SMS (short message service) or
microblogging service. Uses send text messages of 140
characters maximum.
• Is Twitter for business? According to Twitter it is.
https://business.twitter.com/twitter-101
• With Twitter you can communicate with your “followers” in
real time.
• Helps define your personal brand through the content you
communicate.Darlene F Hill @EduAnalyst
I think the potential here for therapists is amazing. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id

• Facebook is a primarily
personal social media site.
• While it’s possible to have
a business Facebook page,
it’s not always a good idea.
• There is a lot potential
professional liability
associated with Facebook
and health care related
businesses (including
mental health).
• The risk may outweigh the
benefit. Weigh it carefully.
Google Plus (G+)
• Google plus is Google’s interpretation of social networking
• It includes Google Groups. In groups you can group contacts
according to interests and interact within that group (rather than
all your contacts at once) so you are able to target content.
• Goggle Hangouts lets you chat with your groups online.
• All of this available under the Google umbrella – which includes
Youtube, Google Search and Google Maps.
• Goggle Sparks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRkAdTflltc
Blogs: Blogger, WordPress, Tumblr
• Blogs are a website, or logs, where a user or a group of users can
disseminate information or opinions to the larger internet public.
The information they contain can be anything the author choses.
• WordPress and Tumblr are blog hosting sites.
• Blogs can contain text, images, video, audio or hypertext links.
• Blogs are another social media tool which can help shape your
online identity.
Learning from Mental health Professionals &
organizations
• Different professionals approach the internet in different ways and to
different degrees. For example Julie Hanks, LCSW, has a very strong
and real time presence while other professionals presence is limited to a
LinkedIn account or even just an email.
• At least some online presence is preferable for at least basic
information so clients or potential clients have a better chance of finding
you or your organization.
• Organization sites are powerful tool in disseminating information to
both the public and mental health professionals.
• As a professional, become involved in mental health and professional
groups associated with your field to better stay informed.
Managing your online identity
• Dashboards such as HootSuite, TweetDeck are practical when managing
multiple areas of online content and were the biggest surprise to me.
• Topys is a real time social search engine allowing you to find content such as
Twitter feeds about a specific topic – like you.
• Goggle Alerts send you emails notifying you on new content published on
subjects you have defined and the use of “+” or “-” can refine your search.
• If you don’t manage your online identity, it may just be managed for you.

• Curation tools such as Pinterest, Diigo, and Scoop.it
provide an additional way to self brand.
• They are also great ways to diseminate more
information and in the case of Pinterest, it a more
visual way.
• Remember, always keep in mind the ethics of your
online presence.
• Here’s a great link: http://abovethelaw.com/in-house-
counseling/page/9/
Websites & domain names
• Visiting and searching through GoDaddy.com is one of the
easiest ways to obtain a domain name.
• Host sites like Wordpress, SquareSpace and Wix are making it easier for
just about anyone to build their own Website.
• A professional Website is just one more way to create and maintain your
personal brand.

Making A Difference
Goals & Strategies
WORK! WORK! WILL YOU WORK?!
• Goal setting is imperative to Self Brand management. It’s
not just about “throwing stuff out there”.
• Determine who your audience is and what you want to say to them. Is it in a
blog, tweets, a simple Website which directs people to you or is it something
more non-traditional in the field of mental health – such as therapy in Virtual
Worlds?
Links to information regarding Virtual World Therapy:

http://onlinetherapyinstitute.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/AvatarTherapyCAPA1.pdf
• Goal/Mission setting outlines what information you want to share and why.
slideshare
• SlideShare is a slide hosting service which supports muliple file formats such
as : PowerPoint, PDF, or OpenOffice
• SlideShare also supports video and Webinars (online line seminars).
• Provides another way to share information, but in a more dynamic way.
• Not your style? You might want to check out http://www.prezi.com
• You are watching a presentation created using PowerPoint and presented on
SlideShare!
Final thoughts
• Creating an online identity takes careful thought and planning.
• Personal Branding is a large part of online identity creation.
• Familiarity with available tools can seem overwhelming but, there are resourced
to help manage multiple platforms.
• You must decide how much time you wish to spend publishing content online, but
some online presence is to your professional advantage.
• Most importantly, determine who you are what you want
to say always keeping in mind, nothing disappears online.
Be conscious of your professional identity and your ethical
responsibilities.
