Connecting to the internet implies the transfer of data. The numbers of devices and what they transfer imply a lot of data. Who is governing all of this data? Wer sich mit Data Driven Journalism beschäftigt, sieht sich bei der Recherche und bei der Vermittlung seiner Inhalte oft vor zusätzliche Herausforderungen gestellt: Was tun, wenn die brisanten Daten zwar veröffentlicht sind, aber in einer Form vorliegen, die eine Weiterverarbeitung unmöglich macht? Und, wie kann ich meine Ergebnisse ohne viel Aufwand ansprechend graphisch online Präsentieren. In diesem Praxis-Workshop soll es einerseits darum gehen, wie man mit der einsteigerfreundlichen Programmiersprache “ruby” Skripte zum “Scrapen” (Einsammeln) von Daten erstellt. Andererseits werden einfach nutzbare online-Visualisierungstools vorgestellt. Approximately 3.5 million Americans are living in homelessness today. Because homeless individuals do not have consistent access to public transportation, they often rely on walking to get to their destination to apply for jobs, receive food, or arrive at their shelters. The average homeless person stands in lines about 4 hours a day and walks on the average of 35 miles a day. Due to these long hours on their feet and exposure to a variety of germs, homeless individuals can suffer from severe foot infections such as chronic tinea, immersion foot, ingrown nails, calluses, plantar warts, corns and etc. These foot care problems for people who are homeless are a major deterrent for one to getting or maintaining a job. How can we improve foot care for the homeless?

The Chicago Children’s Museum currently has an “Invention Lab” to broaden a child’s perspective on what it means to learn and innovate the world around them. As the second most visited children’s museum in the country, the museum is taking inspiration from the Tinkering School to update their lab to one that can encourage an exploration of open-ended problems, patient problem solving, adventure, and self-directed learning. How can we create an exhibit for tinkering and innovation?

Starting with user research, they are digging deep to understand both the physical and psychological reasons why we all continue to not wear our helmets. Will their solution be like the dinging reminder for seatbelts? Or will it be a solution so compelling that you'd rather wear a helmet than not wear one?
