 Abstract: Livestock manures are an important resource in sustainable and organic crop production. This publication
 addresses the problems and challenges of using both raw and composted manures and discusses some of the solutions.
 It also deals with guano, a similar material.

    The 90- and 120-day restrictions on manure
application are mainly intended to prevent food
contamination with manure pathogens. Beyond
these timing constraints, however, additional
agronomic considerations are involved in sched-
uling manure applications.
    Generally, manures and composts have their
strongest effect on a crop or cover crop if applied
just in advance of planting. Growers of agro-
nomic crops commonly apply them to the most
nitrogen-hungry and responsive crops. In
midwestern organic rotations (see Figure 1), this
