CONFERENCE ON HUMAN RIGHTS WAS HELD ON OCTOBER 22, 2013 IN UPPSALA, SWEDEN
The conference was a kick-off meeting for the expert group within theHuman Rights in Practice (“MR
ipraktiken”) project. Representatives of NGOs, politicians and training organizationswere gathered to
improve developed in the project game with their ideas.
The meeting was opened by the Rector of Folkuniversitetet Uppsala, Gunnar Danielsson. The first
speaker was Ali Rashidi, director of the Department for International Cooperation of
Folkuniversitetet, who spoke about creativity and lateral thinking in relation to human rights. After
him the project manager,YevgeniaAverhed, presented the project.
Major part of the day was dedicated to ‘Best practices for working with Human Rights from EU and
third world countries’, a workshop by the President of Dimitra training center in Greece,
NikolaosPitsoulis. During the workshop the Greek guest demonstrated ‘Socialization through
education highway’ game that was closely related to the result the ‘Human Rights in Practice’ is to
achieve.
“Our efforts won’t be a success without our consulting a number of experts that can make significant
contribution. Today representatives of immigrant NGOs, politicians, educators and other specialists
shared their ideas and expertise. We are extremely grateful to them, and I have a strong belief that
our project will manage to improve the situation newly arrived immigrants are facing today”, - says
YevgeniyaAverhed, the project manager of Department for International Cooperation of
Folkuniversitetet.
The project "Human rights in practice" has the overall objectives to help streamline efforts to prevent
violence and to strengthen the newly arrived third-country nationals, especially women,
opportunities to exercise their human rights. The project is developing a training package for human
rights education and learning for intercultural dialogue in which questions about traditions in honor
cultures are in conflict with the values that form the basis of human rights conventions and Swedish
legislation.
