2. Petersberg Phase II Process
Jointly supported by the Government of Germany and the World Bank
"Petersberg Round Tables on Transboundary Waters," was launched in 1998 and
highlighted water as an opportunity for close regional cooperation from a global
perspective through a series of Round Tables.
Phase II focuses on specific challenges, such as furthering transboundary
/
development and conservation programmes in smaller catchment
basins of Southeastern Europe.

a. Raising the capacity of key SEE stakeholders at regional, national and
local levels regarding TWRM, promoting dialogue, enhancing networking and
communication;
b. Enhancing synergies among key regional processes and promoting action
on the ground.

- Signing of a MoU, a “Strategic Shared Vision”, by the Ministers of the
Drin Riparians for the management of the Drin including concreted steps
towards the preparation of an IWRM plan (UNECE, Swedish EPA) for the
management of the basin
- Establishment of the Drin Core Group (joint coordination body)
• Towards structured Stakeholders Involvement in the Sava River Basin

- Issues such as shared groundwater management has not been
addressed yet effectively in the region especially at the transboundary
level.
- Emerging challenges such as incorporation of climate variability
considerations in the management of the shared basins

The Process has been contributing in the initiation and realization of

• The Brdo Roundtable (Integrated Management of Shared
Groundwater
in Southeastern Europe, Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, 14-16 November
2007) has provided the ground for the endorsement of the Project by
the countries;
GWP-Med:
- has designed the “Stakeholders Involvement” Component
(one of 4 Components in total) and prepared the respective part of the
project document using own resources.
- Executes the “Stakeholders Involvement” Component providing in
kind and in cash co-financing
