Henry W Longfellow was an American poet and educator born in 1807 in Portland, Massachusetts. Some of his major poetry collections included Voices of the Night and Ballads and Other Poems. The excerpted poem describes a village smithy, a mighty blacksmith, under a spreading chestnut tree, with strong brawny arms and muscles like iron bands, who works hard with an honest sweat and owes nothing to any man.
