Notes de l'éditeur
{"60":"An upcoming event that Chris Denny knows all about is our annual Buffalo Bayou Regatta – this will be the 38th year, formerly the Reeking Regatta. This race is Texas largest canoe and kayak race and is quite unique in that you paddle through the heart of Houston. The race begins at San Felipe and Voss and ends at Sesquicentennial Park. Last year, we had close to 350 canoes and kayaks and over 450 participants. The regatta attracts people from all over the state. \n","5":"BBP was established in 1986 as a result of Mayor Kathy Whitmire’s task force to provide a realistic strategy for buffalo bayou’s redevelopment. \nAn interesting fact about the saving of Buffalo Bayou from being lined in concrete…In 1967 Terry Hershey (Houston’s mother earth) worked with George H.W. Bush, who was the Senator at the time and George Mitchell (who created the Woodlands), in making sure this waterway was kept in its natural state.\nAt the time, it was thought the best way to decrease flooding was to line our bayous in concrete. It is not the case and this really disturbs the ecosystem.\nI’ll show you Sabine Promenade in a few minutes and mention how we have increased water capacity.\n","55":"Another popular event is KBR Kids day, taking place in the summer, which attracts over 5000 families to the banks of the bayou for family friendly activities. \n","11":"The project has received over 11 design awards and attracted over 10,000 Houstonians for the grand opening. \nRevitalized spaces great for events. \n","61":"Volunteering is an opportunity to connect with large companies. We Currently work with el paso, shell oil, exxon mobil, IKEA, and many schools. \n","23":"Visitor center for biking/boating rentals, restrooms, information\n","12":"The project has received over 11 design awards and attracted over 10,000 Houstonians for the grand opening. \nRevitalized spaces great for events. \n","1":"Introduce myself - \nHappy to be here and appreciate the invitation to present a little background on Buffalo Bayou Partnership, our initiatives, and outline our efforts for restoring Houston’s Historic Waterfront \n","18":"In order to attract people to the bayou for these tours and events, one of BBP’s major responsibilities is to clean and maintain the bayou. we operate a skimmer boat, like this one – this is actually our new one named “Catch My Drift” - we had a naming contest and this was the People’s Choice selection. Our previous skimmer boat, capsized during Hurricane Ike was named the Mighty Tidy. The skimmer boat help to remove trash and debris from the Bayou. We also have a partnership with the Port of Houston Authority and Shell Oil, called Clean + Green Program. Clean + Green uses community service workers to collect debris where our skimmer boats are unable to reach. The program, which has been in operation for over 2 years.\nThere are numerous outfalls located along Buffalo Bayou. Whenever it rains, stormwater carries plastic bottles, trash, and essentially anything left in our streets down the stormwater drains and into the bayou. Mention containment booms…\n","13":"Brief history about allen’s landing – it is the site where the allen brothers founded the city of houston. They were the city’s pioneers and first entrepreurs, selling houston as handsome…\nFirst port, turning basin, location where all the goods came in\n","2":"Our city is blessed with all these waterways – we are called the Bayou City. Over 22 watersheds that feed into Buffalo Bayou, the mother of all bayous.\n","19":"Volunteering is an opportunity to connect with large companies. We Currently work with el paso, shell oil, exxon mobil, IKEA, and many schools. \n","8":"One of bbp’s first improvement projects along the bayou. \nSes-qua – centennial park - located behind the wortham center. \n22.5 acres - completed in two phases - phase 1 1986 and phase 2 - 1989\nSeven wonders pillars –the columns highlight Houston’s history through the themes of agriculture, energy, manufacturing, medicine, philanthropy, technology and transportation. \nEach column is constructed of 150 individual children’s drawings, etched in stainless steel plate. \n","58":"To increase community involvement and promote improvements along Buffalo Bayou, we offer a variety of tours – pontoon boat tours, history hikes, birding tours, kayak tours, and our popular bat tours, which take place on the pontoon boat.\nThere is a large bat colony living under Waugh Bridge – about 250,000 bats – the second largest urban bat colony after Austin.\n","14":"Today, the international coffee building is the last remaining industrial building along allen’s landing. In 2000, bbp began renovation of allen’s landing starting with phase one, which included pedestrian access to the bayou, a series of docks along the bayou providing boat access to allen’s landing, and interpretive displays about the sites cultural history. Currently developing phase two – designed and under construction next year. \n","3":"A top priority of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is to build a system of trails on the north and south banks of Buffalo Bayou from Shepherd Drive to the Turning Basin. \nCurrently, we have trails from Shepherd to the Theatre District, at Preston Street, and then 4 miles (round trip) of trails east of downtown from McKee to Lockwood Street – Much of the land east of downtown is commercial property, so it takes time for easement approval from various land owners. \n","9":"More recent project is sabine promenade, a 23 acre site; \n$12 million waterfront redevelopment project; \nGoal of the project was to increase accessibility and restore prominence of buffalo bayou, while also accommodating and increasing flood capacity by grading back the banks. The project includes flood control, hike and bike trails, public art, 13 street to trail connections. 300,000 plants were planted and over 700 new trees – mention the lighting system\n","59":"To increase community involvement and promote improvements along Buffalo Bayou, we offer a variety of tours – pontoon boat tours, history hikes, birding tours, kayak tours, and our popular bat tours, which take place on the pontoon boat.\nThere is a large bat colony living under Waugh Bridge – about 250,000 bats – the second largest urban bat colony after Austin.\n","26":"A top priority of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is to build a system of trails on the north and south banks of Buffalo Bayou from Shepherd Drive to the Turning Basin. \nCurrently, we have trails from Shepherd to the Theatre District, at Preston Street, and then 4 miles (round trip) of trails east of downtown from McKee to Lockwood Street – Much of the land east of downtown is commercial property, so it takes time for easement approval from various land owners. \n","15":"The next four slides are final renderings of what the building will look like. \nThe Plaza level includes bike, canoe, kayak rentals, changing rooms and lockers. With all of the existing hike and bike trails, there is nowhere to buy a bottle of water. The second floor is currently designed for bbp offices and includes public restrooms and a bayou overlook. The third floor is designed as flexible event and gallery space that works together with the rooftop garden.\nThe large open plaza provides flexible gathering space for events such as community markets, outdoor concerts, recreational demonstrations, and so forth. \n","10":"The project has received over 11 design awards and attracted over 10,000 Houstonians for the grand opening. \nRevitalized spaces great for events. \n"}
