Weathering and erosion are natural processes that change rocks over time. Weathering is when rocks are physically or chemically broken down, such as by tree roots splitting rocks or minerals changing. Physical weathering cuts rocks without altering minerals, while chemical weathering changes minerals. Erosion then transports weathered rocks from one place to another through processes like exfoliation, abrasion, and deposition.

2. Weathering Weathering is when a rock is changed physically or chemically. Trees are an example of weathering. Their roots can cut a rock straight in half! No kidding !

3. Physical Weathering Physical weathering is when a rock is cut without changing its minerals. Rocks such as granite, limestone, and even obsidian can be cut by physical weathering.

4. Chemical Weathering Chemical weathering is when the minerals inside a rock are changed. The picture above is an example of this. This is an example of chemical weathering.

5. Exfoliation Exfoliation is when a mountain is peeled like an onion by a glacier or other large natural form. Half Dome was formed by exfoliation. Half Dome in Yosemite

6. Abrasion Abrasion is when sand gets into the cracks inside a rock and as the wind blows, slowly breaks down the rock into amazing formations. This is a diagram about abrasion.

7. Erosion + Deposition Erosion is when weathered rocks are carried from one place to another. Deposition is when that rock is finally deposited somewhere.
