What is blended
learning?
Blended learning
means different
things to different
people.
Combining or mixing
modes of web-based
technology: live/web
based classroom; self-
paced
instruction/streaming;
video, audio,
text/collaborative
learning to accomplish
an educational goal.
Combining any form of F2F learning
with any form of instructional
technology.

instructional
technology and actual
tasks to link learning to
life and work.

LAB: Students move
from classroom to lab

What are the
advantages of
blended
learning?
Direct Instruction/

Direct Instruction/
Guided Discussion
Learners develop
technology and
media fluency.
Flexibility—access to learning any time, anywhere.
Access to global resources and materials.
Access to a range of materials that meets student’s level of
instruction and interests.
Self pacing for slow or accelerated learners—reduces stress and
maximizes instruction. Individualized and effective range of
interaction between instructor and student:
F2F, email, discussion boards, chat.
Learners have the
ability to track
their own progress.
Learners learn through a variety of
activities that apply to many different
learning styles.
Direct Instruction/
Guided Discussion
“Blended learning can
improve and support the
quality of face to face
teaching.”
Direct Instruction/
Guided Discussion
What are the
disadvantages
of blended
learning?
Direct Instruction/
Guided Discussion
Feelings of isolation; minimal contact with instructors;
lack of collaboration and interaction with peers.
Difficulty in the learning curve of navigating
through the system.
Lack of student motivation.
Lags in the feedback process.
Infrastructural problems—lack of funding, personnel,
planning to e-learning process.
Learners do not know how to
learn independently. Learning
coaches do not know how to
mentor students.

Comfort with chaos--
Students will be doing
different things, at
different times, on varying
levels, and with varying
content.
Student learning data analysis
and decision making—
responding a ‘fire-hose’ of
student data.
Targeted Learning
Opportunities-Learning how
to support students who are
learning different things, at
different paces, through
different approaches.
Specialization and
teamwork—content
experts, learning
coaches, facilitators,
non-academic teachers.
Technological Prowess--ability to
communicate in a variety of media,
explore and use a range of online
tools, handle basic troubleshooting.--Horn and Staker
“It doesn’t matter how tech
savvy you are, as long as you are
inspired and willing to rethink
your approach to teaching.”
