Green elements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 The final bill invests $32.80 billion in clean energy, $26.86 billion in energy efficiency, and $18.95 billion in green transportation. Environment America ( www.environmentamerica.org ) highlighted the following provisions: Extending and “recession proofing” the renewable energy incentives, which will prevent 55.8 million tons of global warming pollution per year by the end of the three year extension and create or protect 254,000 jobs in the near term; Creating a renewable energy manufacturing tax credit; Fully funding the Green Jobs Act at $500 million over 2 years which will train 70,000 workers in renewable energy and energy efficiency jobs; Investing $4.5 billion to upgrade our electricity transmission system to better take advantage of renewable energy and improve efficiency; Providing $5 billion for the Weatherization Assistance Program, enough to prevent 9.7 million tons of global warming pollution and create 375,000 jobs; Providing $4.5 billion in green building funding to improve energy efficiency of the federal government, the nation’s biggest energy user; Funding the State Energy Program at $3.1 billion to help citizens and businesses save energy; Providing $3.2 billion in block grants for local government energy efficiency and renewable energy projects; Providing $8.4 billion in public transit, which will save 10.3 million barrels of oil and create or preserve 252,000 jobs, with $1.5 billion set aside for expanding capacity and upgrades to existing transit systems; Investing $8 billion for new high speed rail projects. Dernbach ed., 2009). The book is a comprehensive assessment of U.S. progress toward sustainable development in recent years and a roadmap of more than 100 specific next steps toward achieving a sustainable America. The book (with 41 contributing authors) covers production and consumption of energy; climate change; transportation; forestry; oceans and estuaries; religion; and state, local, and national governance. While the book focuses on a broad range of sustainable development issues, it concludes that climate change has become the most prominent sustainable development issue in the United States. Key recommendations are that 1) the United States should systematically reduce its ecological footprint; 2) the United States government must adopt, as soon as possible, greenhouse gas emission reduction programs that will reduce U.S. emissions to its fair share of safe global emissions; and 3) The United States should create more employment opportunities in environmental protection and restoration, and make it easier for unskilled and low-income persons to enter and remain in the workforce. The "greening of industry" is driving unprecedented growth in careers dedicated to environmental health, and the numbers back it up. According to The Environment Business Journal, green business was a $265 billion industry in 2005 (not including the organic industry), and employed approximately 1.6 million people. Just about every industry features a pro-environment job description. Here's a look at four green career options. Finance Mutual Fund Manager Mutual fund managers can specialize in green investing, selecting only equity investments that meet a certain standard of social and environmental responsibility. Besides supporting environmentally sound business practices, green investing is smart. In recent years, mutual funds have outperformed standard funds. "Research demonstrates that being environmentally effective can add value to a company," reports Forbes magazine. As a green mutual fund manager, you'll play a role in channeling money to companies that deserve the support. An online finance degree can put you on the path to a green investing career. Start with an online bachelor's degree in finance, and work your way up from an entry-level position as a mutual fund analyst. Or you can accelerate the process with an online MBA in finance; some schools even offer an environmental finance MBA. Salary depends on performance, but mutual fund manager salaries typically run $150,000 or higher. A junior research analyst can expect to start at $60,000. Law Environmental Lawyer or Paralegal Environmental lawyers and paralegals defend the environment against threats and damage. They seek the enforcement of laws created to prevent or punish actions that compromise air and water quality, threaten ecosystems, or otherwise damage the environment. Environmental lawyers and paralegals ensure that corporations are held accountable for their ecological impact. Online paralegal programs and law schools offer the professional degrees necessary to begin an environmental law career. Aspiring paralegals can take advantage of online paralegal degrees at the associate or bachelor's level, or certificate programs designed for college graduates. Law schools offer a three-year, post-baccalaureate program leading to a professional Juris Doctor (J.D.) law degree . Paralegals average $44,000 a year, with entry-level salaries starting at $25,000 and rising to $60,000. Lawyers across the board earned a median salary of $94,930 in 2004; environmental lawyers came in at $77,500. Design Fashion Designer Eco-friendly fashion design has hit the runway. "For the cool and stylish, green is the new black," reported the Herald Tribune recently. Green design means renewable resources, higher manufacturing standards, and fair labor practices. Green designers emphasize recycled fabrics and renewable fibers such as hemp, bamboo, and organic cotton. And they keep a close eye on clothing production, ensuring fair trade practices. Fashion design colleges do their part to promote green chic with courses in sustainability and eco-friendly design, green fashion merchandising, and more. A fashion design degree is the first step to a career in eco-friendly fashion design. You'll learn the basics of green design, develop a portfolio, and make valuable contacts in the industry. Fashion design salaries vary widely. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median salary of $55,840. But if your eco-friendly line captures the public's imagination and conscience, you can make significantly more. Education Environmental Educator Awareness of environmental issues is the key to a better tomorrow. Environmental educators may teach ecology, science, or environmental policy in the schools. Or they may work as a naturalist or interpretive guide for an environmental nonprofit, fostering public appreciation of the environment. In the private sector, environmental educators are hired to teach the public about a company's environmental products. Aspiring environmental educators can prepare for a teaching career with a degree in education. As the urgency of environmental issues intensifies, more and more schools are developing environmental education degree programs, which combine teaching degree courses with environmental science instruction. Environmental educator salaries vary widely by specialty. Elementary and secondary school teachers averaged $43,000 in 2004. Interpretive park rangers earn about $30,000. Eco-friendly behavior is not just a way of life--it's also a way of work. Nearly every career path offers a niche for promoting environmental conservation. In many cases, that pro-environment specialty also features some of the best job prospects. Environmental problems are not going away. Your environmental career can put you at the forefront of the growing eco-friendly revolution.
