Reflecting the price trend noted by IDC corp Amazon has 2 models under $100 -- kinda
Without ads, they cost over $100.
How it handlesdrm
The Kindle makes things easier for the “can’ts”Lower-priced ereaders help the have-nots, but it does nothing for the costs associated with Overdrive.
Kindles are closed devices, do not support the standard ePub format used by Overdrive and other vendors, so people who buy Kindles for library use will not be able to use them with another library ebook service. If a large number of library patrons buy Kindles to use with library ebooks, a library may feel like they cannot leave Overdrive.
Overdrive is a powerful force in libraries, and it’s power is now tied with Amazon, which is flexing its muscles in media.
Time will tell what Amazon has in store for us. The way things are now, libraries have no say in how media companies deal with us. Intentionally or not, we’ve given Overdrive a proxy to represent our interests with publishers.
Harvard Business School professor Clayton M. Christensen
Minimal if any social functionality. Innovation is done not to facilitate access, does not reflect how people use media. Development does not reflect local libraries

No, the future isn’t bleak. The present is tight, though.
I’m optimistic. And realistic. Nothing has been set in stone. Publishers don’t like the new gatekeepers.
