WHY?
Ereader boom 1: Holidays 2010 3 million – 5 million ereaders were activated in the week after Christmas 2010
Ereader Boom 2 Holidays 2011 – Here we go again!
Sub-$100ereaders Ereader shipments to reach 27 million units for 2011
Has fixed everything that is wrong with ebooks in libraries?
Yes. Thanks for coming.
;-)
Without ads: $109 $139
The Kindle is easier to use than any other ereaderfor Overdrive ebooks for a reason.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) “Think of DRM on an eBook as a lock, with your eReader having the key to open the lock and display the file.” - Jason Griffey
The Amazon/ Overdrive system removes the transaction from one DRM system to another, one that Amazon fully controls.
This improves one aspect of Overdrive ebooks: the complexity
Haves and Have-nots Cans and Can’ts
State Library of Kansas Almost 700% increase in Digital Library Reserve Server Application Service fee : From $10,800 in 2010 to $75,000 in 2013 – fee includes no content Removal of language that acknowledged consortium ownership of material
State Library of Kansas has received permission from 88 of 163 publishers (so far)

"Amazon is holding the entire book industry hostage…First they disintermediated retailers, and now it's publishers and authors."
"Amazon is holding the entire book industry hostage…First they disintermediated retailers, and now it's publishers and authors." Are libraries next?
Competition for Overdrive
http://tmi.skygawker.com/PubLibEBooks.pdf
It is as if these companies see serving the evolving content needs of patrons is a problem best served by throwing money at it.
Publishers haven’t figured out how to sell ebooks Predictions: “ebooks will kill traditional publishing/libraries” The real threat to publishing: Not the ebook Consolidation and…
…Borders Bankruptcy
Publishing: new gatekeepers
Volatile pricing
disruptive technology: a new technology that unexpectedly displaces an established technology.
Ebooks are disruptive.
Electronic content is disruptive.
Libraries need systems to reflect the new reality of electronic content
New Media Dynamic New ideas Market driven Prices fluctuate Innovative
Many Competitors
Econtent in libraries Static prices No culture of innovation
Econtent in libraries Little competition Crippling subscriptions
Is the future bleak?
Libraries are stuck.
There are obstacles in our way
There are obstacles in our way
We have some battles ahead of us
OptimismDoes NotDenoteNaiveté.
The right ideas can make a difference.
Libraries could combine their community presence…
and professional values of service…
with technology that reflects the work ethic and spirit of a tech start-up…
technology that is adaptive…
social…
based on a culture of
and electronic content …
that is valuable to our patrons…
and priced by the market,
without busting libraries’ budgets?
By libraries, with libraries, for libraries.

Advocates and Partner Libraries
Go to: libraryrenewal.org/partners New separate Advocates/Partners sections coming in November
Group #1: Readers advisory work. reviews, book lists, etc.
Group #2 - writing and presenting at the local level.
Group #3 – Anything else you want to do to help! Seriously!
Use your skills for even more good! Three areas that need you. “I Am Library Renewal” Advocates are a special group of folks. Research shows that about one in 100 folks who leave engaged comments on a web site are really willing to step up and do something more substantial. That is you! That is also your fellow Advocates here! We are a rare breed of highly motivated library lovers. We understand that libraries need new content solutions that finally put us in control and are willing to put our money where our mouths are. We are stepping up and are ready to DO SOMETHING about it. Library Renewal is here to be a tool to carefully help organize and shape and guide that work WITH YOU ALL AND YOUR INPUT. We look at it this way; If we’re building a system for libraries, with libraries and by libraries, well, without Advocates like you, it just couldn’t be done the right way, right? So your work here is very important. Please never forget that. It is hard to do more in our busy lives…but we also know clearly that we live in unparalleled times of change, threat and opportunity for libraries. Let’s join together here in our various roles as Advocates and step by step shape the future of content access via libraries. Click here for info on getting started as an Advocate and Click here to see a list of some of your fellow Library Renewal Advocates and what projects they are working on. The first step in becoming an Advocate is to send in your customized info sheet. Click here to do that now. Done? Perfect. Let’s get started! Things like e-book and audiobook reviews, book lists, etc. We have lots of titles that need to be read and reviewed by someone with your librarian chops! So if that sounds interesting to you, drop us a line and we’ll get started! Once you’re signed up, here’s a link that will let you into those Readers Advisory Advocates pages. Group #2 sees Advocates writing and presenting about issues surrounding electronic content access and the future of libraries, with a Library Renewal twist . We are particularly looking for folks to present and write in local venues. Once we’ve talked with you about it all and you are in this group, you’ll be able to access the Author and Presenter Advocates area of the site. Group #3 is for you if your expertise or interests don’t fit in with Group 1 or 2. It’s no problem, really. There is lots of work to be done and you likely have an idea or two about what that work should be. Naturally then, we’d love to talk with you about it all and how you think you might be able to move things forward using your other skills. 8. Kindles are closed devices, do not support the standard ePub format used by Overdrive and other vendors, so people who buy Kindles for library use will not be able to use them with another library ebook service. If a large number of library patrons buy Kindles to use with library ebooks, a library may feel like they cannot leave Overdrive.
  9. Overdrive is a powerful force in libraries, and it’s power is now tied with Amazon, which is flexing its muscles in media.
  10. Time will tell what Amazon has in store for us. The way things are now, libraries have no say in how media companies deal with us. Intentionally or not, we’ve given Overdrive a proxy to represent our interests with publishers.

  15. No, the future isn’t bleak. The present is tight, though.
  16. I’m optimistic. And realistic. Nothing has been set in stone. Publishers don’t like the new gatekeepers.
