3. INTRODUCTION
In “Forrest Gump,” Winston Groom adds a short introduction in his book:
One day when Curtis had to change a wheel on the car, I helped him,
‘If you´re an idiot,’ he said angrily, how do you know how to do that?’
‘Maybe I am an idiot,’ I said, ‘but I´m not stupid.’
I was born an idiot, but I´m cleverer than most people think.
We quickly realize this is true in this wonderfully warm and
funny story about Forrest Gump, a good-hearted young man
from Alabama in the USA. He wins a medal for being very
braves in the Vietnam war and meets the President of the
United States of America. He becomes a footballer, a film
start, a businessman and he goes into space. And his best
friend is an ape called Sue!.(1)
4. CHAPTER 1 SCHOOLL AND FOOTBALL
In Chapter 1 Winston Groom introduces Forrest Gump as an idiot “I was born an idiot- but I´m
cleverer than people think. I can think things Ok, But when I have to say them or write them
down, sometimes they come out all wrong” (1).
According to the movie, Zemeckis introduces Forrest Gump “The film begins with a feather falling
to the feet of Forrest Gump who is sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. Forrest picks up the
feather and puts it in the book Curious George, then tells the story of his life to a woman seated
next to him. The listeners at the bus stop change regularly throughout his narration, each showing a
different attitude ranging from disbelief and indifference to rapt veneration.”
In a Forrest Gump book, Winston Groom describes Forrest´s school life as “He is raised by a
protective widowed mother, attends a useless special school for "funny fellers," until a growth spurt
at age 16 gets him recruited for high school football. When Coach Fellers sees how fast he
is, Forrest becomes a halfback and makes the All State Football Team.”(1,2,3,4)
Robert Zemeckis describes Gump´s school life as a solitary boy in his film:
On his first day of school, he meets a girl named Jenny, whose life is followed in parallel to Forrest's at times.
Having discarded his leg braces, his ability to run at lightning speed gets him into college on a football
scholarship.
5. CHAPTER 2 LIFE AT THE UNIVERSITY
During chapter 2 in “Forrest Gump Life at University,” Winston Groom argues:
When we got to the university, Coach Bryant came to talk to us. ‘Last man to get to the practice
field will get a ride there on my shoe!’ he shouted at us. And he meant it when he said that kind of
think . . . .
The building that I went to live in was nice on the outside but not on the inside. Most of the
doors and windows were broken, and the floor was dirty. I lived in a room with a man called Curtis.
He crashed into. . . . (4-5)
Curtis was always angry, and I couldn’t understand him. He had a car, and sometimes he gave me a
ride to the practice field. But one day when he had to change a wheel on the car, Forrest helped
him. According to the Groom´s book, Curtis said to Forest “‘if you´re an idiot,’ I said, angrily, ‘how
do you know how to do that?’” (5). That night of football game, everybody went to parties, but
nobody asked Forest to go. He went back to his room and he found a young man who was playing
the harmonica. His name was Bubba. He broke his foot in football practice and couldn’t play in the
game. He sat and listened to him. . . and began to play. (6-7)
On the other hand, Forest movie describes Forest and Bubba friendship during Vietnam War “After
his college graduation, he enlists in the army and is sent to Vietnam, where he makes fast friends
with a black man named Bubba, who convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him
when the war is over.”
6. CHAPTER 3 THE BIG GAME
In “Forrest Gump chapter 3 the big game,” Winston Groom argues:
The night, where Forrest went to see Jenny, he played the
harmonica with them and had to do it until the end of the year for
25 $. The big game of the year arrived but they lost because of a
player in the team. Coach Bryant begged the dean to let Forrest
play one more year and he accepted. This year. . . .
His last year ended and he had to come home. When he
arrived to Mobile, Alabama, a letter came saying he had to go to
Vietnam for the war and fight . . . (7-8-9-10)
Robert Zemeckis in his film never describe that Forest had played
the harmonic with Jenny´s group for 25$. According to the
movie, the big game passed and Forrest participated and his team
was the Champions so, they visited to the President.
