Endoscopic Trigger Thumb Release
Trigger thumb (also known as stenosing tenosynovitis) is a painful condition of the thumb caused by
either a narrowing of the tunnel that supports the tendon which flexes the thumb, or increased
inflammation of the same tendon. The first symptoms are usually soreness at the base of the thumb.
Painful clicking or snapping often occurs and some notice the thumb gets locked in particular position
and cannot straighten. Conditions such as diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis can cause increased
swelling around the tendon and subsequently trigger thumb. People who perform repetitive activity or
forceful gripping are also more susceptible. However, in some cases no specific cause can be identified.
Dr. Fitzmaurice is a Minimally Invasive Hand Surgeon located in Phoenix Arizona, and has developed a
technique to treat this condition through a minimal incision. Patients notice a significant improvement
in pain by first follow up visit (generally within 2 weeks). Patients begin using the thumb immediately for
light activity and return to normal activity within 1 week, much quicker than traditional open
procedures. This minimal incision also allows much faster healing with minimal scar tissue and little to
no pain.
Specialized instrumentation is used to provide complete visualization of the tendon and digital nerve,
which is commonly found in this region. The thickened tissue over the tendon is safely divided, allowing
pain-free movement of the tendon while protecting the nerve from injury. All patients who have had the
procedure performed have experienced improvement in symptoms without any need for therapy or
complications. None of these patients have had a recurrence of symptoms after this procedure.
Dr. Fitzmaurice is the only surgeon in Arizona who is performing this procedure endoscopically. To
